Why Would You NOT Grow Autoflowers? — The Commitment-Shy Hobbyist

Well I stand corrected now that all the experts have weighed in, autos are just as good quality/potency, just as stable as multi-generation photo crosses and produce just as much as photos. Never would have known if I hadn't logged in today, thanks. (puts tongue back in cheek)

I don't think its a matter of which one is better, auto or photo.

Its more about what style suits you.

Photo has so pros and cobs. Like seperate veg and flower area.

With an auto you can perpetual grow with one room. It cost me around 20 bucks a month to run my fan/filter, fans, and 432 watt light 20 hours a day.

Yea keep those elite strains is nice and all but I don't sell. So if I keep a strain, get tired of it.

I'd do both, photo and auto. Both have pros and cons.

Sorry but I don't remember saying any of those things, autos will yield less in nearly all cases. On the plus side I've had autos that finished in 65days from seed. I can't comment on stability except for the fact from the breeder I purchase from every seed performs as expected.

As far as potency, the autos I grow personally seem just as potent as any other high quality medicine I've sampled.

These newer xxl autos and what not can hit a half pound or better in 90 days.

The only way you can do that with photo plants is with clone.

Obviously exaggerating it a bit - lol I'm sure there are exceptions and keep seeing more and more autos. From a breeder's perspective, it's the holy grail. If you're in it for the money there's no better seed to produce and probably quite a good market for them as legalization expands out. Just not my cup of tea but one day I'll grow out all the freebie autos I have lying around and see what all the hype is about!

Anything's possible I suppose, it's much easier to produce fire genetics and stable strains through breeding regs, any breeding for stability or specific traits takes too long for me to waste my limited time and space with autos.. Regular seeds offer more stable and more potent strains today, unless you actually believe autos today are equivalent to regs or even fems, I highly doubt that's the case. They are a good niche for certain growers, nothing else, any claims beyond that and you're just fooling yourself.
And what I'm saying is that "niche" is a pretty big one, and offers interesting opportunities to entrepreneurs of all stripes. Much like home winemaking there's a low-expertise, high-payback market of potential hobbyists out there, and autoflowers could be a meaningful part of the mix.

It's a whole 'nother thing compared to expert growing, which is (I take it) the baseline of this site.

Oh I don't doubt that it's been a breeder's dream and for sure with new markets opening up there will be a very good market for them. I'm an old school grower, made a bunch of money years ago when lbs. were $3-$4k and it was just recreational black market weed ("meds" didn't exist then). Money is of no interest to me now, will leave those opportunities to the youngins ;)

And you're right, some people are better off growing autos. I don't know if it's so much expertise rather than you either have a green thumb or you don't. Many growers here grow a lot more than the green, growing is second nature to them, in their blood. My interest/passion for it came from my grandfather, I was gardening with him when I was a kid and never really stopped.

And then there's the misconception that autos are easier to grow...

Personally I've grown both regular plants and autos, autos are more of a challenge for me personally. There isn't a 18/6 reset button and if you are feeding them synthetically you need to have your nutrient schedule pretty tight if you want to yield decently. There is much less room for error involved. It doesn't take a green thumb to change a timer from 18/6 to 12/12.Aside from light cycles there is nothing easier about autos.

I was able to take a ruderalis plant and cross with an ICE of my own back crossing and made an auto out of it. Gonna run em again this winter.

Good point, to a point though. Growing photos requires a lot of other skills which aren't needed when growing autos, like sexing, timing of transplants/vegging for perpetual, cloning, and yes timer changes for anyone who doesn't have dedicated veg/flower spaces - lol So auto growers are short changing their skill development, as well as smoking less potent weed (jab/joke).

Well, I ride a bicycle nearly every day, but I don't race. Similarly, I garden, but I don't garden extremely.

My little operation, which completely fills my need to nurture something, also produces more quality weed than I can smoke. All in, my investment has been something under $300 for seeds, equipment & consumables, which I made up with my first harvest.

I understand completely autoflowers might seem beneath your skill level, insufficiently challenging, not worth the time, etc., etc. But I think many-first time growers (the largest category!) would disagree.

Err . . . I stuck mine in pots outside and watered them. After some time, I cut them down and smoked them and they made me high. What am I missing here that's not 'easy?'

And you yielded pretty poorly... My point is if you want to actually get something out of them, you dont have as much room for error. They aren't any easier than a photosensitive plant, light cycles aside.

I'm guessing you also don't like yappy little dogs, especially any that can fit into a woman's handbag and answer to the name 'Fifi?'
Why would i lol?
autoflowering is annoying when you want to run clones. thats why id like to eliminate them from any projects of mine or in the universe.
Well maybe not the entire earth as they have a use for some people i just dont want any in my cloning or breeding projects.
