Why should I care about what happens to the human race?

(from a devils advocate position, I just thought this question would be really interesting)

But, given whatever you might personally believe, why do you think you, as an individual, should care about the human race at large? Do you feel any sort of obligation to make sure our species exists into the future?

I need no reason to care, to love, to want to put good into the world. I need no reason to help, to work towards a better future, to feel a responsibility towards my fellow man. Love is my religion, caring is my nature, and sharing is my gift.

I think that the trait of caring about the fate of humanity has evolved in most of us to a certain degree. Humanity must survive in order for any of our genes to live on, after all. I personally like the fact that sentient creatures exist so that the universe is able to 'reflect on itself' so to speak. It also seems that we value things that are rare, and currently not being able to detect any other life anywhere in the cosmos, conscious life is certainly that. I'm not really one to get behind local sports teams, and I'm not into civic pride or civic loyalty, but I'm really all for Team Humanity. I know I'm bias, but I think the universe is more interesting with us in it, and this is coming from a guy who can't stand almost anyone...

It pretty much boils down to selfishness. The better society is, the better the standard of life will be, and who doesn't want a better standard of life?

I would think the opposite would be rather boring and personally I think it's one of our major redeeming features, the capacity to care, to have empathy towards others.

Yes. Selfishness devoid of destruction is probably the most true form of altruism. A creative selfish person realizes that the only way to better his quality of life is to better the environment he lives in. Thus benefits all within his circle of influence. I am with you there man. Get what you are saying one hundred percent.

I think my take on this is that if we're all connected we shouldn't (hear no, see no, speak no) harm.

I remember my first child when born, looking into her eye's and realizing how my life had suddenly changed.Thinking how I had to straighten up ,be more responsible, start giving a shit about environment, the air we breathe, wanting to make this a better place for her to grow up in and prosper. Then...I thought......F@!K her! this place was F@!@#ed up when I got here!

Living simply will give you a better standard of life than aspiring to own lots of shit - destroying other things in the process.

You have to define "standard of life" to state that we all aspire to it (we don't), and right now, most people's idea of a higher standard of living is a bigger TV.

Is that what you want?

Plus, if physicists' current calculations are correct, life is probably pretty common throughout the universe, so it's no big deal if we survive or not. There will be life elsewhere. If not, it will evolve given the right conditions and enough time.

We only care about others because we are intrinsically selfish: it makes us feel good. You treat your wife and kids well (or not) because it ultimately makes you feel better - not because you're some super-altruistic being.

I feel we are all connected at a deeper level. But people only see themselves through their own eyes. They have to: they can't see through others' no matter how they try.

Here we go with another genius thread.

This should have been posted in Politics.
What possess you to post on threads you disagree with? One would think instead of making unnecessary comments and wasting your own time, you'd simply avoid it and save yourself the trouble, especially since the posters name is right there beside the name of the thread.

I get it, you disagree with me on a lot of issues or you dislike me for whatever reason, you don't need to point it out in every thread I make or after every post.

Why I click on posts I disagree with? LOL Half this forum is disagreeing with one another.
Ever hear of that Uncle Buck character?

I don't dislike you, just some of your posts are very trivial and I'm amazed at the amount people who are truly misguided in life that respond to your posts.

Please come up with some better topics.

Legitimate disagreement is usually coupled with some sort of useful counterpoint if it's raised, otherwise there is no point to even mentioning it

You are truly misguided if you think that's the reason anyone replies to what I post

As I said before, feel free to avoid the threads I post if they don't meet your standards

What this is an example of is people calling a meeting, you coming in, saying "great, here we go again!" and walking out. Hopefully you wouldn't do that in person, so why would it be appropriate here? That type of behavior is best left outside, feel me?

That's why I generally avoid your posts.
If I don't have anything useful to say, I don't say it.
I don't have the time to reply to all the lost sheep you attract.
I'm more than willing to post advice to people that comprehend on a high school level.

its all a matter of perspective. whether you care or not will not affect the human race. for those that would seek to harm it would be opposed by those who share an opposite outlook. to put it simply, life goes on.
