Why do Republicans hate Iran but love Saudi Arabia?

Does this make sense to anyone?

15 of the 19 hijackers that committed 9/11 came from Saudi Arabia, none came from Iran. Saudi Arabia is one of the worst countries on Earth when it comes to human rights abuses, on par with North Korea. They execute people for 'witchcraft', blasphemy, and atheism. Women have unbelievably restricted rights. Homosexuals have no rights. Yet we partner with them and sell them a hundred billion dollars in weapons...

How can anyone possibly take the US seriously anymore? Saudi's are murdering Yemeni's every day.

Correction; we've sold them $350 billion worth of weapons. That's one reason we like them, they're good customers.

Another reason; they turn the oil taps on and off when they're told.

Another reason; they've been gladly letting Western oil companies work their oil fields for over half a century... And spending their cash in the West.

In so doing, they helped make sure oil was on the US dollar standard.

They let us build military bases in their country.

It's a good little quid pro quo arrangement.

Why let a few (thousand) murders, a bit of downtown Manhattan demolition and undermining human rights come between friends?

Shit, they even said they'd pay for us to fuck up Yemen for them.

Times change and with it the players. I attended classified military training in the 70's and there was Iranian military in school with us.

Economics. The Saudi monarchy is right wing, oil rich and loves to do business with us. Iran is left-wing and does business with China and Russia and our little regime change operation a few decades back was a stunning failure. This is a great thread topic to highlight Western imperialism.
Agreed on all counts.

Iran is hated by America because it consistently refused to play ball on our terms.

I can provide a much better explanation.

90% of Muslims are Sunnis. Saudi Arabia--a Sunni kingdom--controls the two holiest sites in Islam. Imagine the impact of serious Salafists taking and controlling those sites. Give those places up and it's obviously what God wants, right?

That's why the United States tolerates the repressive regime in Saudi Arabia. Honestly, we're terrified about what democracy or chaos might produce. Better to arm a relatively friendly regime than to suffer the unknown.

Understand that the 9/11 hijacker count is misleading. bin Laden was a Saudi who was miffed when the Saudi government opted for American troops to defend against Saddam Hussein instead of his Mujahideen. That's when he decided to target our country. I can recall reading that operatives with Saudi nationality were intentionally chosen with the intent of damaging relations.

Of course, I'll acknowledge there was another factor at work: it was easier for Saudi citizens to get visas to the United States under the visa waiver program. Terrorists aren't all dumb. That's what makes them so terrifying.

Is oil a factor? Yeah. Chaos in Saudi Arabia means chaos in oil prices, which is obviously bad for the United States. If you think that's the explanation, though, I think you're ignoring decades of obvious geopolitical reality.

Yes, and our terms will assure lasting peace in the Middle East.

And @abandonconflict , we are not imperialists. We are just the very best, and for some reason that pisses off the rest of the world, and apparently you as well.

Yes, we have shown imperialist tendencies. Any country in our position would. But our influence outside our country, whether by political, economic, or military means, has prevented WW3 many times over.

No, we're imperialists.

We start wars without provocation, we overthrow democratically elected governments, we arm thugs, we bomb foreign nations with flying robots by remote control, we declare ourselves 'world cops' and then act like the planet's most murderous assholes- which we are.

Stop sucking the corporate run propaganda cock and either quit making statements you can't back up- or go overseas and see for yourself.

Until then, you're just another misinformed idiot, talking shit you know nothing about.

Bullshit.

We have been a great world-leading country. We saved Europe's fucking ass twice within 30 years of them fucking up world peace. Our only mistake there was not marching toward Russia in 1945 to kick their pathetic asses as well. No Cold War, Korean Conflict, Viet Nam, Cuban Missile Crisis, shall I go on?

Our "imperialism" has been both imperfect and necessary for continued world peace.
