Why are the stems purple on my plant?

These plants have been in my system for about a week and were 1.5-2.5 weeks old when I received them. I am using a 600 watt metal halide bulb and have water constantly cycling to each plant from a water pump. This is my first attempt at growing, and I was just curious as to why the stems are turning purple. Does anyone know if this is normal or what causes this? Thanks :eyesmoke:

Occasionally, the stem can turn pruple, due to the plant's genetics. But in your case (the stem is not fully purple, there are some green spots left), it's the beginning of a P def. A higher concentration of nutes will fix this, but be careful, I see some nute burn on some of the leaves... maybe go with something with a bit less N and more P and K.

what are your room temps cause if they are to high this can happen also it will keep your plant from breathing the way they needs to

Thanks for the replies I will look into a couple things. New nutes are being added today, so I can adjust accordingly. The room temperature is a little high as well. I have it vented well, but its a strong light (600watt) for a closet. I have a fan blowing in from the outside where the window ac is also to help, but it is still like 83 degrees. Also, the strain is sour grapes (sour diesel x chemdog x purple elephant), so it might have something to do with that as well. I will watch for a few does after some adjustments and update. Thanks again for the advice!

mine r a lil purple 2(white widow) im goin w/ high temps. stays around 83 consistantly but will jump up to 87 mid day. during the day now i take out one bulb(i have 6 cfl's) makes it 4 degrees cooler. i have a well sealed box with lower cool intake and high mounted exhaust fan. get a thermometer with a max/min temp if you dont already. it will show you the spike in temp.

I think ur 100% right. I just started my indoor journey about 3 months ago and on my 1st cycle and half way through my 2nd the closet stayed at 80-82 degrees and all the stems were purple til about 1-2 inches to the top. thanks for the good info!

Sorry about the really late update! The stem problem cleared up pretty quickly with regular nutrients. All the new growth since has been green, but that means most of the fan leaf stems are purple. Looks kind of cool. Anyways, the purple stems have not been any problem at all now, just make sure and continue to treat them right and they will be great!

Also I will update with pics later today.
