Why are my stems always so thin?

I had a white widow plant growing about a month ago, I gave it too many nutes and it died (or so I thought, as it's still weall alive in the garden somehow) Whenever I exposed it to any natural wind it blew right over because I was growing it indoors with a tiny 12 volt fan blowing on it. Now it's out in the garden the stem has thickened and it can stand by itself so that's okay.

I now have 3 white widows and 3 holy grails growing in my DIY closet under a standard 40watt CFL (pathetic I know but I can't afford a better bulb right now) with a homemade hanger made from a sheet of aluminium I bought on fleabay and the same 3 speed PC fan bodged up to a 12v power supply. They are only around 2-3 weeks in (I don't keep count) so you'd expect the stems to be thin, but I don't want them to get to a decent size and start budding only to fall over under the weight.

Am I just being silly and over time they will thicken? Or do I need stronger wind stimulation? The current fan is gently blowing on them, so they wave gently but it's not hurricane wind speeds..

Cheers

You need to get the cfl closer 6" and cool it down with an exhaust fan.
So I should lower the hanger, okay - As for an exhaust port, The outsides of the unit are cardboard covered in kevlar sheeting, should I cut a hole in one of the panels and push the fan into that? Would that work? And if I do that, then I'll have no fan blowing in the plants so should I get another for the exhaust port? I know I've got more of those fans so it shouldn't be a massive issue

You can put a passive intake at bottom, an exhaust fan near top and leave the 1 you have on plants where it iss.

40 watt cfl??? You will never get a good thick stock with that amount of light. Address theissue it doesnt matter how much wind you have if they cannot grow.

As long as you see movement your air movement is fine, look at lighting.

Wait until you can get more lighting, 40W is not enough, are you using an incandescent bulb or cfl?

Weak lighting and not good enough fans/ air flow will give you small stems.

I used to veg under enviros , and the stems off the plants where so thin , they couldnt support there own weight sometimes , never mind bud.

Since I upped my veg to a 400watt hps , well no more pencil dick stems , tempted to push the veg to a 600 .
