why 12/12

Hi all

I was just wondering why 12/12 for flowering, and not 10/14 or something else. Just something I was wondering about.

Thanks

12/12 simulates the even amount of daylight and darkness the earth reiceives during the end of summer and into fall. It tricks the plant into thinking that winter is coming; therefore causing it to flower, forcing the plant to try and pollinate, or make seeds. Does this answer your question?

Hi

Thanks for replying, but it doesn't really answer my question, I don't think I asked it properly. I know that the 12/12 light cycle starts the plant into flowering because it thinks winter is coming, but surely this changes naturally as the year progresses, and I was wondering why indoor growers use 12/12, is it the minimum amout of darkness it needs, therefore getting the maximum light during flowering ? What would the outcome be if the plant was put on a light cycle that gave progressively less light ? Or was put onto say 10/14 or 8/16.

Thanks again

I don't think it would differ much. All I know, is that people have been growing inside for years, and found that 12/12 is the best light cycle for flowering. Why would you want to give the plant less light? The more light, the more time it has to photosynthesis.

I would think that up to a point, the more light, the bigger the buds. The only problem is ... the plants flower at 12/12. Probably, and having never experimented with it, I would think that anything less than 12 hours of light would produce smaller buds. Has anyone here experimented with this? I know some Sativas require less than 12 hours of light during in order to finish at all.

O.K. thanks for that, I just wanted to know why. Maybe if someone has a more explainatory answer they could let me know. Also if the more light it has, the more photosynthesis, why not have them on 24/0 during veg. I'm just inquisitive.

Thanks again for replying.

Hi

Yeah sativa's are reported to grow naturally around the equator, where the photoperiod changes only slightly, infact if you where right on the equator, you would get around 12/12 all the time which would explain why some need less than 12 hours to finish flowering.
So the reason for using 12/12 is to give them as much light as possible to make bigger buds, but still to induce flowering, thats basically what I wanted to know.

Thanks for taking the time to reply

I read somewhere that the plant can only take in around 18 hrs of sunlight a day. anything more is just over kill. don't know if it is true, but sounds good.

Thanks for that, I had my first grow on 18/6 and was told by a friend to put them on 23/1, I don't know if it was just coincidence but I did notice faster growth.
I would just like to know some facts thats why I have been asking these questions. I was also told that the plants like to drink in the dark, and thats why 23/1 photoperiod is used, anyone have any thoughts on this ?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks again for all the answers.
