Who says a day has to be 24 hours?

This goes against life as we know it but bear with me..

Has anyone here ever ran their lights based on anything longer then a 24 hour day?

What if you ran your light based on say a 36 hour day.. so your veg would be 36 on or 27/9 and flower would be 18/18. Or you could take it to an even larger scale as long as you stick to the same ratio of light time...

curious if anyone has tried it with results

If you did 27/9, I would highly suspect that the plants would see that as one 24/0 day, and the next as a 15/9 day and following days would shift around that nine hours of darkness so the day and night periods would start shifting all over the place as the plant recognizes it.

It is an interesting question, but I don't see how it'll benefit anything really. I'll stick to my 24/0 :)

Next grow I will try something like this. Maybe 16/4 Everyone says the light schedual will constantly change and that the grower will go crazy but I think I can handle it.

Flowering at 18/18 might not work. But only way to know is to try. I would try 12/14 for flower. Or maybe 11/15

If you veg 24/0, the whole veg cycle is just one long day. I believe the plants need a little off duty time. But I haven't experimented either.

Well I veg under 24hrs every day sometimes. I've vegged for a month before like that.. so I guess you can say that's a 720 hour day

I'd think they'd be happier with a normal 24 hr in a day flower cycle since that's what they get in nature and have adapted to.

years ago i experimented with 18 hour days meaning 12 hours off and 6 hours on. you need to work out the maths on a digital timer.
you could also try 12 hours on and 6 hours off. What i found was my pure kush loved it but lost a little potency and legs. other strains such as violator kush hated it and died.

I ran this experiment last year. I used a 28 hour light/dark cycle. This way I got 6 Cycles in 7 days. 28*6=24*7. For veg I used 22/6, day/night. For bloom I used 16/12. With this timing I was getting an additional 12 of light each week while maintaining the 12 hour dark period. So the real question for me was, Is flower initiation regulated solely by the length of the dark period irregardless of the day length?
I begged everything for 5 weeks.

After 4 weeks of 16/12 the test plant did not initiate flowering. I switched them to 12/12 and they flowered within days.

Yes at 16-12 a plant will not really start flower because light reactions produce to much specific hormones to stop it.

Cannabis plants do not require darkness because cannabis is a C3 carbon fixing plant. That just means that cannabis can carry out the reactions of the 'dark cycle' with or without light on. Plants that are C4 fixers *do* require darkness, however, because these types of plants need to store CO2 during the dark cycle and cannot store it during photosynthesis. Whereas C3 plants like cannabis can gather CO2 during photosynthesis and can carry out the dark cycle (aka Calvin cycle) with or without the light on.

I think really the only question is whether or not you can afford to pay the higher electricity bill of 24/0 over 18/6 and whether or not your light provides the DLI your plants can handle in 24 hours or if you can provide them all that light in just 18 hours.

This 27/9 or longer then 24 hour schedule is interesting but I am pretty sure that the only thing that matters to a plant is if there is 12 hours (well its not exactly 12, some plants 11 some 13) of uninterrupted darkness or not. So 27/9 would be vegging simply because you are giving them 9 hours of darkness, the 27 hours of light doesn't matter.

That what I thought too but when I gave them 12 hours of darkness and 16 hours of light they would not flower. After the first two weeks, when the control plants were flowering, I Tried adding far red 5 minutes pre and post sunset to further encourage Flowering. Still no flowering after an additional 2 weeks. Once I switched to 12/12 they initiated flowering within days.
