white on bottom of stem

i have 2 cuttings from cheese and have what looks like some white stuff on the bottom of the stem were the plant enters the ferimist (red stone) does anybody know what this is?? help as i dont want to lose these cuttings. ay help welcome!!

you'll spend hours trying to figure out how to describe it, and the Dr.s will tell you a different things based on that description...but the pic, if the detail is there, will tell all.

what're your environmental condtions like?
