Damn guys:) Thanks a lot for all this help !!!!!!! I'l be subbed to your threads!!
I've never planted anything else besides cannabis and I'm very interested in gardening.. Benfranklin I totally agree with you.. So many humans have become ultimately distracted that they no longer grow their own foods.. we depend on others to make it for us lol.. Fuck ->Monsanto. I'm going to grow my own stuff as soon as I got the proper experience/knowledge.. plus my grandparents were farmers/gardeners when they were younger:) I;m really excited to get started!

It's beyond not growing our own food but most dont have a clue how to even grow it , harvest it , preserve it , store it, save seed, and preapare it for use.

If some emergency happened like a large scale EMP most of the population would die , becouse they dont posses the skills their parents and grandparents thought of as common knowlege

I've been asking that question for decades.......

What happens when an EMP goes off?

thats what most people do not realize, nuclear war is obsolete, the EMP itself would do much more damage.

Well, I have half of my space cleared out... While I am cleaning stuff out, I am plotting grow strategies in my head, I picked up some FFOF and some Happy Frog soil and a huge bag of perlite. I am going to run some organically in soil and run lettuce, spinach, herbs and leafy things in hydro. I Think....... Thinking May change as implementation proceeds.

my story goes like this: I was raised on the border of Canada in Northern NY, it's all farming up there, then my dad got a job in the city(not NYC, but a city in NY)when I was about 12-13. At 15 I left home went out on my own it was time to make my own way in life. Met my wife when I was 20, we've moved all over,, a few years ago we owned a house in the middle of a town... Lots of people all around everyone in everyone else's business always... I got sick of it. But thankfully god was on my side, the house was flooded and we lost everything forcing us to move...... So, we bought a log cabin in the middle of the woods on 40 acres.... Closest neighbor is a 1/2 mile down the road..... It's fucking AWESOME! I couldn't take another friggin' moment of suburbia living... Anyway, we get to do wtf we want to around here, it's all farmers who don't give a shit, as long as it doesn't effect them. So... I am going to mess around with hydroponics/aqua phonics on a large scale. In the back 40, we have about 20 acres of trees and 20 of bare field that sits on top of a glen, there is ALWAYS water flowing from the 3 springs on our property. I figure to take advantage of the natural surroundings here, maybe even in the future set up a waterfall that will help power my house

Take a good look at what's happening / happened in WV
http://www.thedailysheeple.com/crisis-reality-within-an-hour-the-stores-were-emptied_012014

Far from a isolated inocedent , and in WV it was just domestic water, trucks were still rolling in trains, FEMA, national guard ect. ect.

Ultimatly we are responsible for our selves , No one will be their to help (surely the gov. wont) , even in such minor inicedents as these the gov. has ben proven useless

I grow mushrooms and mealworms.

I grow mainly oysters cause theyre very tasty and are extremely resistant to contaminations and give you a pretty decent yield, ive even played around at making a cross. Mushrooms give me at least 3 meals a week at virtually no cost. Mealworms are pretty tasty too when fried and an excelent source of proteins and minerals, tbh its a bit hard getting over that psychological barrier but once you do they go down like a treat. I think my chicken prefer them though :P

Knothing wrong with that , I grow red wigler wormes and have expermented eating a few , They are actually considered supper foods becouse of how much proiten and other nutrients are packed in such a small package , they say worms (in general) are 20 times more nutrious than the best cuts of beef pound for pound. The UN or WHO or one of those organizations actually just recomended bugs as a source of protien for the worlds growing population and shrinking food supply

Crickets are anouther one that is susposto be easy to farm and highly nutrious

I have ben trying to keep honey bees for the last 2 years , with no luck

I had a spare bubble boy bucket with a 4 way top(4net pots), so I took a small aeroponics pump and hooked it up inside the bucket and planted a variety pack of lettuce in all 4 pots. Today, I will start some more stuff up, don't know what exactly yet.

Ye i got earthworms too though never tried eating those. Insects have silly amounts of proteins, at least double that of meat. My chickens diet is about 50% worms and 50% grain. They grow MUCH faster than when only fed grain. The mealworms actually fill you up a fair bit. I only tried eating them because of those survival shows a guy watches sometimes lol, but then realized theyre an alright snack. though to be honest taking in consideration how fucking fast they reproduce one could be self sufficient on a protein source nooo problem with mealworms and little space too. I can really see how it could be the protein source of the future, plus they eat next to nothing.
Ive never tried eating mice but those are a good source too if you think about it... 1 month gestation and couple of months later theyre good to eat. Similar to rabits but you cant rabit all the time. Oh ye rabbit is great to raise if you own cats or dogs, thats their food taken care of. My neghbour had a litter of 18 rabbits once he had to kill 6 cause there werent enough tits.

There is no way I would fuck with a mouse, hungry or not....

I am not a survivalist so much, that's not to say I don't know how to survive. That's saying at the moment I choose to live as comfortably as a hillbilly can live..... It's funny but, even when you have days off around here, you still end up working.... And outside of knowledge and utilizing your surroundings, survival is really just hard work, and you must work for a living....

The people that will make it will be the rats, the folks that know how to fight for every little scrap.

somedays I even ask myself would I even want to live in those sorts of circumstances?

Then I remember our forefathers... And I think to myself well, instead of blowing my brains out, I could fight for my country... With dying for it being a possibility and my life not being wasted.

going hungry around here wouldn't be possible, I have way to much firepower to worry about ever going hungry. Plus the Mathews bow... We have all manner and sorts of hunting implements... Lol Ithaca shotguns, my favorite is my .45-70 Winchester lever... No ammo shortage problem here....=)

Knowing how to survive and knowing how to survive after a disaster are 2 very different things

after something like a emp the woods will be hunted of within several months, same with the lakes and rivers, water will nearly all be contaminated , lack of contamination is still the number 1 killer in all third world countrys where people generaly know how to take care of waste, Then their will be bands of gangs stealing, rapeing, pillageing that will put a hurting to say the least on even the best prepared . A hungry man can smell food for miles, fire equels smoke dead giveaway makes boilling water very hard, letalone staying warm

The people that are fighting for every scrap will be the first to die, without modern medicine and sanitation a simple scratch can kill , remeber it was not long ago that a infected wound with maggots in it was a good sign ( if you know when to pick them out it still can be)

I don't think that things will be hunted off as fast as folks think, the same people hunting, will be the same people banding together to make armies and protect their boundaries.

Remember vietnam? We made Alamos, and then would send out recon.... City folks would be so screwed.... And that's where the rats would go. Others in the city who had machinations and fantasies of surviving in the forests will be encountered by folks like me protecting their property.

Rural people know each other, far more likely to cooperate with each other...

city folks, not so much.....

Not to mention there is still cows, horses, chickens... Rabbits.... We would look like 3rd world china/mad max.. IMO

folks like me would set up electricity as soon as possible, cool thing about electricity is that it existed before electronics and takes only basic knowledge to generate.

In my opinion there are worse things than dying... Surviving in an apocalyptic world... Being one of them, at my age.

Their are several churches/temples or whatever by me that have them , Almost no one ever uses them thow, some even have beutifull premade raisedbeds with pre-worked soil already in them .

Al you have to do is ask (at the church by me) and they will give you some room

A nice space saveing idea for indoors

Hi LC
(I may not share your politics but you're obviously a devotee to the God of Gardening).

In the UK the railways have lots of land that in unsuitable for most types of development - being next to the tracks - but it's perfect for allotments*
As you leave the inner city areas, and enter the less built up, 'suburban' parts, you start to notice thousands of small patches of vegetables or fruit gardens.
Usually the local councils are the people who have the right an responsibility to ensure the land is suitable leased for extremely reasonable rents.

In other areas these same plots are used for pigeons or even chickens.
My Dad kept rabbits and pigs on one
But the area was gentrified and the 140 year old 'Pig Club' was forced to disband.

If I was one of the few who survived an apocalyptic events the first place I would head to would be the largest major pharmacies.
Some of the medications would be the last ever made - and I'd want to stock up.
I would get the strong pain killing type of drugs that have always had a huge black market
but, more than those, I'd want the antibiotics.
Being the UK finding guns and ammo wouldn't be easy.
Police stations and army premises would be the most obvious places to look.

Basil. Chives. Oregano. Parsley.

The economics ($) of growing vegetables inside in hydro does not work out for me.
