Where should I place my fan?

Hey guys, I am going to be growing a plant in my closet.
I wanted to know if I should have my fan inside the closet so it blows air out.
Or should I have my fan blowing air inside my closet.

Well, you want air moving in and out of the closet... for CO2 exchange, and you want your plant to be getting a nice gentle breeze (depending on your humidity, this might be essential).

The "cracks" around the closet should be enough for the air exchange. So inside may be most useful.

Remember that when it flowers you will most likely want to be exhausting air out of the closet, into a filter, to keep the smell down. and you'll only want enough "cracks" to allow air in for the exhaust to blow out... otherwise the air/smell will escape anyway. But also don't seal it up too tight, or you'll wind up with too high a negative pressure.

the exhuast system ....(blowing out) u want it at the highest point in the area right above the light itself (this is to move out the hot air as fast as u can anything above 80F is bad as it degrades the THC )

your intake system .....(sucking air in) u have choices .....the one thing that they have in common is the intake is placed low to the ground so it pulls in Cool Co2 enriched air
1 is a passive intake .....this is just a hole that the can pass tho freely (if your exhuast system is a 4 in fan u need a 8x8 inch hole if your fan is 6 inches u need a 12x12 inch hole ) double the size of the fan
2 is a powered intake .......this is just fan to match the fan that is blowing out

we we say fans we mean
1 inline fan .....a speed controller will work on this type of units

2 booster fan .....speed controller will not work with booster fans (if u go booster fans look at the fan blades u are looking for metal ones they can run at a faster CFM rating )

the last part of this is the math ...........LxWxH of your area will give u the cubic feet
now u want to replace that air in the area at least 1 time every 3-5 mins(this is the minimal amount to have healthy plant ) .....personally i like faster 1 time every 45 secs 1 time every min

anything else u need to know about venting ?

Just a regular fan. I am going to be using it primarily to control humidity.
I'm going to put it inside and see what it does to the humidity.
Then try it outside and see how the humidity changes.

You also said keep the fan above the lights, so do you think I should hang my fan so it's pointing directly at the lights or just put it in my closet on the ground pointing up at the lights?

no what u are talking about doing will not work as effectively as u want u would need to keep the intake air around 65F for something like that to work ( i tried basically the same thing in a tent when i firist started ) ....in winter time might work as u can cut the heat back saving u money .....but summer time it is going to burn a hole in your wallet for AC


the fan itself can work as a intake fan setting on the ground blowing in the cool air (just so u know with fans like this u do not want them hitting the plants .....it can cause wind burn to the leaves ) but setting up a small static fan at the bottom of the door blowing in (hitting the planters not the leaves)

this is the ducting used with it ......it is flexie and comes with the clamps u need

so u hang the fan in the center of the room above the light itself......put the ducting on the back of it and then run the ducting to a window

u keep the shades drawl down and use that in the window ........to ppl outside it will look like a portable AC venting

this is called a exchange room ........what it is doing is pulling in the cool co2 enriched air into the closet and it is dumping the hot used oxygen enriched air outside (this is good your Co2 lvls in the area where the plant is will increase more given the plant more power to bud from it)


the only bad thing is with this smell does get dumped outside ........now if u are apartment building on a upper floor this does not matter ( say the wind speed on the ground is 6 miles a hour go up 20 feet and it is16 another 20 feet and 26 mph...add 10mph every 20 feet off the ground u are)

if u are ground lvl u might need a carbon filter (this is a filter that removes smells using active carbon to caputer it before it passes outside)
ok when using a filter u want to match the filters CFM rating to the fans CFM rating .....gets u the most life out of your filter (12-15 months)

Keep this in mind a couple of tings:

I terms of controlling your temps: do you need to? My climate is between 50-60, so my tiny box, using LED and CFL for light, actually needs those lights to keep a good temp. Pucing ait in or out would drive my temps too low. Assuming you keep a temp of around 70 in your house, it'll depend on your light. High powered lights use a cooling fan but this is not to control you box temperatures... it is to control the temperature of the light.... because if it runs hot it will have a shorter life span. Best thing to do is run the light you'll be using (with the closet closed) and using a thermometer to measure temps in different parts of the box (about canopy height and near the lights being the most relevant), best done if you some how hang the thermometer at that height and check it after a few hours.

Controlling humidity: even where I am, where ambient humidity is high, I have found that making sure there was air blowing in and around the plant ensure the least problems with things like mold, mildew and rot. Using LST and a targeted fan on low (for a gentle breeze) can take care of that without need for forced intake or exhaust.
