when to turn to bloom

Whenever you want. No, seriously, it's a personal decision, but the majority will tell you that your plants will more than double during the stretch, so if room is an issue, there you have it. If space/time isn't an issue, you can bloom until the plants naturally flower themselves which will force you into instituting a flowering photoperiod.

check out my grow journal pics and you will see my plants. i have recently changed to a 600w metal hallide bulb which seem to be stopping them from stretching but keeping the nodes very close together.

What strain are you growing? A sativa will stretch far more than an indica strain. Measure the distance from your soil to 12" below your light when it is raised as high as it can go. This will be close to your max height for the plant. An indica will about double, a sativa will at least triple, and a hybrid will usually be somewhere in between.

If it is a bag seed just assume it will be about 2 1/2 times larger/taller.

Edit: thought I read it was 600w so disregard the distance comment. What light are you using?

yup, thats what you want, good n tight internodes. that 600w mh is going to do you wonders. i tried checkin out ur journal to see your plan / setup, but there are no entries. you should post some pics o this thread so we can see what your workin with! how big is your soase, and what all are you usng to grow this lady? nutes, soil, etc.
and are you goign to switch to hps for flower? if you have a MH ballast, you can go to 1000bulbs.com, i got a HPS coversion bulb off there for $22.00, and it did great! check it out, its a great alternative than buying a whole seperate ballast. unless you have a digital that can run both.

Edit: didn't see your replies until I posted so I deleted questions...

I think you can at least let the plants double in height if not a little more before you flower... or whenever you choose before that.

Good Luck, your off to a great start.
