when to top a plant

im growing my first plant and since i dont have a fence i would rather it look like a big shrub than a tall monster its still sprouting but when do i know when to top it
when its 4 weeks into vegetating i will switch from a small pot to one of those home depot buckets using bamboo sticks for support

thanks i have just one more question it says cut at the second true node what does that mean i know what a node is but what does "true node" mean

the node is the part of the plant where the leaves come out from the stock. but the first set of 2 rounded leaves isnt a true node.
although ive never gone by topping by the nodes ive always waited intil its about 6 to 8 inches tall and clip off the crown of the plant.

you want it to be stout and bushy. top numinous times during veg.

make your plants your own and top em when you want. although not before 4th leaf set i would not think.

Of you are using a bucket for a pot, don't forget to but some good sized drainage holes in the bottom
