When to start flowering?

At what age of the plants do you start flowering? I have a book that says to wait until they are at least 6 months old, is this true? Is 3 months and about 2 ft tall too soon?

you either veg early to keep the plants short or you veg when the plants show signs of maturity. these are preflowers and alternating nodes.

i dont think there are very many indoor growers who veg for 6 months.

from seedling i veg just over two weeks and from clone i veg not at all. this keeps my plants short for my puny grow.

6 months???? Is that book for outdoor growing? If the book says that for indoor growing then it must be a mis-print because that is too long for an indoor plant. Not that it would hurt an indoor plant.... it's just not necessary.

I vegged for 7 weeks with plants from seed and I'm planning on vegging 5 weeks with the clones I have.

Three months and 2 feet tall is PLENTY good to start flowering... in fact don't wait any longer. Plants double and sometimes triple in size during flower. I doubt you want a plant bigger then 6 ft. indoors so go ahead and start now. You may want to even consider tying it/them over a bit to help keep the height in check.

Basically the time to flower depends on the space and/or time you have available.
If you are growing in a box you should start to veg when you're plants are just below half the total grow height that you have available so that you're plants will still have enough room to grow during flowering.
Don't forget that with a HPS bulb you are going to need more clearance between the bulb and the plant beacause of the heat it produces.
If time is the main factor you can start any strain (I think) from 12/12 so that flowering will start as soon as the plant starts to mature and bud as fast as possible, the only problem with this is that you can't expect as much bud from a plant thats gonna end up 2ft tall.

I veg until my clones reach 18-24 inches and if they are from seed I wait 2 weeks after they mature (alt nodes), if they go out before mature you can be set back 6 weeks.

Let me see if I can find it again, I had set out one female that was imature but she was 18 inches high, anyways been 3 weeks and still not matureing in flowering room, so I looked it up and pow, says I that can make her a hermie, or put her back and the stress will still cause a 6 week strech of nothing.

This is just something I see, but not what I read 5 days ago.
Problems with 12/12
If you switch to 12/12 before pre-flowers have shown, you may encounter the following problems:
1. Stress-related sex problems (hermaphrodites)
2. Abnormal bud growth

only time i have gotten hermies is when i had issues with my lights. once i got my lights stable i never saw another hermie.

my buds grow normally... also the delays you were talking about do not happen either... my whole flowering cycle ends in under 8 weeks.

what flowering early does do is stunt their growth.

remember, you cant always believe what you read ;)

AS true as that is, one has to wonder where one gets there info to lets say write a few books on the subject of growing Ganja. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Books are knowledge, someone did all the homework for us, we just have to follow.
My One plant I put out to flower inmature (my Mistake) went out with three others that where mature, well the 3 are moving right down the grow line the ONE is still in the same spot after all these weeks, no growth, no alt nodes.
Moral of this story:You can not teach a old dog new tricks.

If you are going to veg for longer than 2 months make sure your pots are bigger than 3 gallon, But I think 2-3 months is pretty good. Check out my Garden and you will see, they all go about 2-3 months and remember they grow 12" or more in flower.
