When to move plants outside?

My friend and I have started our first grow! We bought some early misty seeds offline, germinated them in paper towels and put them in small (2x2x2) peat pots with miracle gro potting soil. They are now sitting in a box under a 15 watt fluorescent to get them moving. We give them water twice a day.

We have cleared an excellent space in the woods outside his house that is nicely hidden. We tilled up the soil and brought in a big bag of potting soil and now our garden is just waiting for the plants to be ready.

We want to move them out there as soon as possible so they can adjust to the outdoor climate and soil. But we don't want them to die cause of shock or anything like that.

So basically... when should we move them into the ground.

Heres a few pics of our setup and how far along the plants are.

Your light was definately too far away and caused your stems to stretch to the light. some suggest burrying that long stem a few inches in the new dirt in order to not have such a long stem. This could work. Some people get stem rott though when attempting this.

I would put them outside now but not with full exposure to the elements. Put them where the wind and sun will not hit them all day. These guys are still babies.

I would keep them in a patio that gets indirect light until those guys have a little more meat on their bones. Maybe two weeks or more?

Well right now they are big enough to go outside anytime but make sure they don't snap because they look stretched most likely you had the light to far away but get them in the ground asap.

also too much water, twice a day is too often more like every other day. i would wait until they had at least 2 or 3 nodes or until you sexed out all the females. good luck with your grow, i want to keep mine indoors but i may have to go gorilla out door on this one. im giving my seedlings 24 hrs of light. my growbox is similar to yours if they get strechy like this i would bury them with an inch or two of dirt. you want more light or one or two plants indoors and the rest outdoors now

Thanks for the quick responses!

I think we're going to plan to move all of them into the ground tomorrow morningish? We'll plan on covering up some of the stems when planting. Are the long stems that big of a problem? And what are the chances of the stems molding if they are covered up but are outside in the open air?

well once that plant has over a doz leafs its gonna get heavy and if the stem is still long and gangly like that is now it could be too heavy to support. i mean, what do i know? it could grow tall and thick and strong enough to hold 1000 leafs and a few oz but if its weak and skinny it could topple before it gets there. whats the worst that could happen? it would lean or fall over and you'd have to hang it on a post like a tomato plant. but i might consider letting more leafs grow, the roots, and maybe even gender before i planted them in my secret marijuana grove.

stems won't rot...just bury them up to an inch below your cotyledons...do not cover the cotyledons

a very important thing is in my opinion, that you transplant your seedlings when the sun is down or going down.then your plants can get the feel of the new soil and just get used to being outdoors.
