When to Harvest Question

Fellow growers,

Yes I have been away for a couple of weeks. Between work and and getting very ill, there has been too little time to post. I'm back now though.

To my question, I have one plant which I saved from a over water fiasco which should be coming close to harvest. I clip a leaf from the top of the cola ever day or so to check the tricomes and view them through a 60x magnifying device (Radio Shack special). I use the link below as a guide.

https://www.rollitup.org/attachments/general-marijuana-growing/719d1164069037-trichs-t

I have to say I have not seen a huge change over the last few days. How do you know when to start checking? Are there other signs that harvest time is growing near?

The best I can tell the plant has quit growing. The few fan leafs which are left are turning yellow. The cola's are very tight and completely covered with white hairs. Thoughts? Comments? When do I know it is time to harvest beyond that which I have shared?

Thanks,

ngtybear

I can see the tricomes, but can not see through them. In the link I included the "clear" stage appears black not clear. Are they actually clear at the beginning?

How much differene does when one harvest make?

Those are not tricomes they are stigmas I beleive. Tricomes are the small crystals on the leaves not the white hairs.

Video, thanks and this is helpful. A couple of questions if you please.

1) Do the state (color) of the have any bearing on the state of the trichomes? In other words, should one begin to take a closer look at the trichomes when the stigma reach a certain color?

2) At which trichome state should one harvest? My enclosed link seams to indicate that it would be best to harvest when the trichomes are "cloudy." Is this the case.

3) Is there a way of knowing how long a plant has to go before harvest?

Thanks,

VideO; BTW, this is one of the plants I almost completely killed with over watering. Brought her back all the way. Not expecting a big yield, and I am sure I have more in cost than she is worth, but after surviving all that I had to see her through to harvest. I have 10 new babies waiting for the flowering box once she is done.

So when harvesting, I just wanna make sure I got this right, for a body lock (total veg on the couch) you wanna harvest when the trichs are 50/50 red, cloudy white right?

Alot of this is stain dependant, but yes, more towards the amber color.
Peace

It looks to me that you have a few more weeks to go... Patience is KEY here.

How long has she been into 12/12 for?

in general when the stigmas start changing amber/brown you could then start watching the trichomes. You can search the site for a few different approaches to this.

2) At which trichome state should one harvest? My enclosed link seams to indicate that it would be best to harvest when the trichomes are "cloudy." Is this the case.

That is actually dependent on your personal taste
full potency should be when the trichomes are cloudy. I personal harvest a bit earlier and am experiementing with harvesting at different times.

I f your seeds come from a seedbank or good breeder you will have a failry accurate window for when flowering will finish. On average it's between 8-10 weeks.

Thanks to everyone for your great replies.

BTT, it has been 8 weeks and 3 days since I switched to 12/12. Also, they were under some heavy duty stress shortly after switching to 12/12 as I over watered them. In fact, I lost 2 of her sisters.

An additional question(s): The Trichomes appear to be increasing. As the plant has quit growing, is it to producing trichomes that the energy being used? Also, at this late in the game, will CO2 still make a difference? I am all setup but ran out of CO2 a week ago and haven't turned it back on.

All,

A little update and a concern.

I like nothing less than a nasty stoned out couch lock high. I am 10 week into 12/12 and continue to check the trichs every of couple of days under the mini - microscope.

Though I ave seen a slight change, I have not seen a significant change. The trichs are larger and stand out on the clear stem, but I would not say any of them look much different color wise. Almost all (if not all) of the fan leaves have turned yellow.

I check by cutting one of the small leaves from the very top of the cola and checking it under the microscope. I can clearly see the trichs, but again no change.

My concern is to go to long. How can I make sure I do not flower to long and ruin the last 5 months worth of hard work, risk and expense? Should I harvest now?

Thanks,

'You sound a bit dramatic.

"How can I make sure I do not flower to long and ruin the last 5 months worth of hard work, risk and expense?"

Easy, harvest a good looking bud and flash dry it, smoke it and evaluate the high; just right, harvest, not quite, wait or harvest immediately - depending on your taste;)

I do not believe, in fact i think ive read that Co2 in late flowering can reduce the potientcy of budz .

you can vaporize a little nugget. you can clip a little nugget and quick dry it. there are several methods. i chop mine up and put them in the oven with just the pilot light on. i checked and it is about 70 degrees and 30% humidity. it takes an hour or 2 to dry out 2 bowl loads.

Well, I harvested this weekend. The buds are hanging upside down now in a cardboard box drying. Right at 100g green and trimmed. Not sure what it will yield once it is done. In know it is not much, but it is my first harvest and it came from a female which was half dead after switching to flowering.

Most important, I have learned more in the last 5 months than I ever wanted to know about pot. :D I have another series of plants about to switch to flowering and have made none of the mistakes I did the first time. I am excited to see the results (if the summer heat doesn't kill them.)
