Nobody actually knows. It's like the dark side of the moon. Sure we have some guesses, but exact details are still a mystery to the scientific community.

I don't have the scientific answer but the way it was explained to me was..."During dark time for the plant it actually does it's growing. It stores up all the energy from the light source and then when it gets dark, the plant uses this stored energy to grow."

I am sure one of the guru's will have a much better explaination but thats the "laymans" version the way I understand it.

I disagree with this. I find that my plants grow during the day. They change visibly during the day, no change at night.

I believe that like all living things. Plants need sleep too. Question what do YOU actually do when its dark? (and by dark i mean sleeping)

Well its the same as in any living matter.Everything needs sleep to repoduce cells.Plants, animals, human, etc. Plants actually produce more hormones at night wich leads to flowering given a 12-12 light cycle that is. Oh and the gents above are right as well plants do store energy but they also burn it so there always growingone way or another.

good question! i think everyone has a speculation to what happens at night, but as some people have mentioned, I also being one to veg 24 on 0 off as well as run normal 18 on 6 off cycles. on that note I personally think the only real thing that happens at night is the plants drink more. its also "said" that during light hours is when the leafs exhail their water which turn into by product 02. also during that time is when the leaf tissue grows also known as photosynthesizing. so we know this much, it doesn't photosynthesize during nighttime hours. I guess everything else is pure speculation?
