What type of soil are you growing peppers (sweet or spicy) in?

like the title ask, what type of soil are you using for you pepper growing. i ordered some hot peppers from
pepper joes (fire in a box) and sweet peppers from gurneys (banana and bell)

i will be planting these seeds outside (zone 10a) in a raised bed, but im wondering what soil to fill it with, will miracle grow work or would it give it a bad taste? foxfarm light warrior? any brand you suggest? i will be mixing the soil with perlite, and maybe some compost pending the type of soil. was also considering using jacks classic 10-30-20 on a select few of the sweet peppers/hot peppers i will grow in pots to see if theres any difference between feeding it jacks vs just planting and giving it sun and water. (read you can just plant them in the ground and as long as they have good soil, sun, and water they will be fine)

I got the Volcano Box from pepper joes! We already started in some starter soil and then will put them in the ground with miracle grow soil for vegetable/gardens - mixed with regular dirt. The miracle grow for vegetables/gardens has nutrients for 3-4 months, so taste shouldn't be a problem when they are finished.

Last year we had the same setup with a variety of peppers.

This year we have ghost peppers which are too hot for me.

lol i wanted to get the volcano but opted for the fire because it came with more seeds lol. im also going to order a Bhut Jolokia plant from http://green2995.stores.yahoo.net/bhjopl.html just incase i fail from growing it from a seed. will miracle grow seed starter work for seeding in a solo cup, then transplanting into the garden bed outside? (only doing some again to see if theres any difference between the methods). i would mix with my dirt, but when i dug out some palms today it was a sandy color dirt (not black like soil) dont know what type it is.(i live in fl dont know if it makes a difference) ill take a picture tomorrow to show, but im guessing miracle grow with perlite would be a fine mix to use for the garden bed to grow the peppers in?

Starting seeds in a solo cup with MG seed starter soil will work.

Don't know about the sandy soil in the yard - i live in sunny california and my backyard soil is great for everything. Miracle grow with perlite should be okay.

this isnt what i dug up today, but this is the same type (by looks) of dirt i dug up that some palm stumps where in

i dug out the 3 to the left today and it was planted in that type of medium (picture above), this is the before picture, ill take one tomorrow of the after

We just planted a hot banana pepper, sweet gypsy pepper, and jalapeno pepper plants. Potted them with Miracle Grow potting mix. I read after planting them that peppers don't like peat moss, which Miracle Grow does contain, but they seem to be doing fine. I clipped the first jalapeno pepper today, I'll let you know how it tastes when I eat it.

I opted to go with pots because the soil is shit where I live too.

use that native soil with compost, manure, and some amendments. bone meal is a good one. you'll be fine.

thanks scroglodyte, but what i might do is either pot grow them or not make a taller raise bed and lining the bottom with plastic so i wont have to dig into the ground. i might even make a smaller second raise bed and mix the native soil with compost and manure (which im sure i can buy from HD/Lowes/nursery? or is it cheaper to get it else were?) and do a little experiment on how it grows in that.

i am growing super hot peppers in pots and i use Sunshine growers mix #4. i am currently growing about 13 plants, and thye all are happy and a few are already putting out pods. but most of what i am growing is ghost pepper hot!

what area (zone) are you growing in. im in zone 10 and im hearing that peppers love hot sun weather but then being told to put it in a shaded area where the afternoon sun wont hit it ? lol so im getting confused as to where i should have them put while growing them

Have you started the seeds yet? Mine are about 2" tall already and in the greenhouse.

i am a member of thehotpepper.com(great place) i am i mile from mission bay in San Diego,ca. my plants get direct sun from 12pm till sunset and they are happy once they get used to the suns rays. if you have them inside you will need to harden them to the sun. i have 13 or so plants and 3 in DWC outside

no i havent yet sadly im trying to find an area where my nephew wont go running into it with his power wheels lol and still get sun... and also reading up alot more. i may just not do a raised bed and have them in pots in a certain area and chicken wire around it.

i may just use roots organic myself. i was considering them for a marijuana grow. what can i use as a fert? i was planning on going with jacks classic 10-10-10? or should i use something else?

no they are not going to be inside. when i get them im going to plant them straight into a soil pot (should i germinate them with paper towel method/shot glass of water/or would planting them straight into soil work) tomorrow (well today) im going to pay attention to the sun in the afternoon till sunset here to see where the best area outside the house would be


in a worst case scenario if i see the plants are getting too much sun (i see sun burns on the leaves or something) and move them into a shaded area would it cause the plants to go into some type of shock for a change of lighting as in the time or amount of light its getting?

Nah, they'll be fine. I ignore my peppers all the time. What's weird is if you let them stress a little, they seem to get hotter. I don't know why, but yeah. I usually feed them whatever I'm feeding MJ. 10-15 gallon containers will get them growing nice and big.
