I run cfl spiral bulbs. I use multiple lightbulbs on the top and sides of the plant (8 bulbs in a 2x2x3 box) (3 6700k, 4- 5000k , and 1-2700k )
for vegging.

However you gotta have the right spectrum. You know how light bulbs are labeled as "cool white or warm white". 5000-6700k which is the blue spectrum is important for vegetative growth. They are labeled "cool" for flowering you want the red spectrum which is 2700k or red labeled as warm.

In my veg area I run a combination of warm white, cool white, daylight T-8's at 40 watts per bulb. Some look red'ish, some look white, some look blue (6700k,5000k,2700k). The plants seem to love them.
