Last year had a young groundhog munching on my plants. For a small critter he put a pretty good hurting on 4-5 of my ladies. A buddy lent me a foot trap. Caught that little fucker the next day and beat him to death with a 5 iron. Usually i'm an animal lover unless their fucking with my girls.
This reminds me of when I grew up in Chatsworth I used to have a half acre seedless watermelon patch and all those damn chinese doves that live out there were tryin to eat em so I got my air rifle and killed a bunch of those mofo's, except I clipped one and it flew off and died in the middle of my neighbors driveway it fell outta the sky right as he was driving up to his house scared the shit outta him.

if only foot tall, it still could be cutworms. They just attack the base of the stem and eat right through. They can eat through a full grown tomato stalk, I know that for a fact.
A quick way to stop them is to get some plastic cups, Cut the bottom off, then slice the cup up the side. Then just slip it around the base of the stem/stalk and bury it an inch or so in the ground.
Long/large nails work too

Turtles dude, they will eat your plants down to the stump.

Don't know if you have them in your area but they have been known to mow down multiple plants in one sitting.
