What is this?

Thats your plant feeding on the lower grow due to those parts not doing their job. Most likely due to bad light in the lower regions of the plant :)

If you want a more precise diagnosis then please post a whole plant shot.

Usually when lower growth has been shed by the plant the leaves will become yellow/brown shrivel up and fall off. When they fall off the leaf stem is generally very pale.

Your leaf stems still look green and not at all like they fell off naturally.

You have multi coloured leaves with dying areas.

IMO these leaves have not come from lack of light.

There seems to be something else going on here IMO as you would expect the entire leaf to be yellow/brown.

Oh because I'm literally pulling them off, I was taught that if the leaf is less than 50% green then you should cut it off

IMO if the leaf is less than 50% green I ask myself WHY???

I train my plants to optimise my penetration.

Anything below the penetration power of my light is removed during veg and the stretch of 12/12.

Then as long as my leaves are happy I know my plants are happy.
