I just bought an 8" VivoSun with built in controller because I couldn't afford a better one like the Vortex S Series.

Good enough I guess but the damn outlet is only 7-5/8" so the adaptor to fit my 6" outlet is going to need some DIY to make it work. Seems cheaply made but then cheap crap usually is. :)

Just get one with the built in controller then you know you're good for a few years.

Can't beat Vortex, thats all I buy.
I was hot for the Vortex for sure but I may only be growing for another year or two so I could make better use of the extra $150 I saved somewhere else. Like paying off my VISA card a little quicker. :)

Built in controller gonna kick on and off all day, will turn you into a school shooter, or even worse a liberal..

Unless you can follow the thread and recommend a brand that won't switch back and forth at every 1/2% rh shift? OP asked for best. Does yours kick on and off every minute, like all the other cheapo identical fans with built in controllers do?

I think he is asking about a speed controller, but I could be mistaken.

What he wants is a variac IMO.

Medical reasons may cause us to sell out and move south nearer the services we can't get here. Calgary way probably as I lived there for 6 years late '70s to '82. Go drive cab again or better yet a limo but with the oil prices tanking again and corona hitting over who knows how long probably won't be a big demand for limos. ;)

I won't get enough from this place to buy down there so unless I find a cool landlord I won't be growing for some time if ever.

I see, the older we get the more important stuff like hospitals become...

Maybe you can find a grower friendly situation since you have time to put the feelers out.

I wouldn't be concerned with the Corona virus thing, I suspect that in a month or two people will have forgotten all about it. At least that's what I am hoping for. People bought all the freaking toilet paper lol none of the food had a run on it tho. Like go ahead and lock yourself away for a few months with a room full of toilet paper and no food. I saw someone on facebook in a local sales group and they were slinging cheapo scotts toilet paper for $5 a roll.

The best is a quality fan and a variac. The digital speed controls tend to chop up your sine wave power and make the motor groan at any speed. A variac is IMO the crème de la crème of AC motor speed control short of an expensive sine wave VFD.

It's just a speed controller. I made one for my current fan from a ceiling fan controller but that fan has been going bad for the last couple years. I have a Temp/RH controller on it as well but mine don't cycle all the time. Analog style with a 120v heat/cool thermostat wired on the cool side and a bathroom RH fan controller wired together so if the heat or RH get too high the fan kicks on at half speed.

ceiling fan controller
definitely not the way to go. those use a triac based speed control and that beats the fuck out of the sine wave, chopping it basically.

A variac simply changes the amplitude of the sine wave, (voltage) but it is a variable transformer and thus maintains the waveform.

This is small 4inch fans
This grow room is only 4x3
With only intake fan running humidity go down too fast and the tent look like ballon about to pop too much air enter and not enough air go out if i turn on the exhaust fan soil is dry in 4hour max

So The cheap amazon stuff will never be the solution? This is about 15usd by the way

I have a variac but use it for other things. Different fans have different motors and the controller I'm using has worked fine for 10 years and the fan was a used no-name one when I got it. I could turn it down to less than a 1/4 and it didn't rattle so that's good enough. A light dimmer screws them up so should never use those.

I figure the controller that comes with a fan ought to be the right one. I haven't hooked up my new one yet but fired it up and tried out the speed control and it worked great. Has a goofy mounting bracket made to bolt to the wall or ceiling so will be drilling a couple holes in the mounting bracket base on the fan to hang from bungee cords.

I have a couple of 6" industrial biscuit fans and one rattles like hell when I used the variac on it but slowed fine with my DIY controller. Scrounged those somewhere years ago and plan to use them between two rooms if I ever build my addition.
