Fatal aspergillosis associated with smoking contaminated marijuana, in a marrow transplant recipient.
Hamadeh R, Ardehali A, Locksley RM, York MK
Chest, 1988 Aug, 94(2):432-3

Abstract:
A 34-year-old man presented with pulmonary aspergillosis on the 75th day after marrow transplant for chronic myelogenous leukemia. The patient had smoked marijuana heavily for several weeks prior to admission. Cultures of the marijuana revealed Aspergillus fumigatus with morphology and growth characteristics identical to the organism grown from open lung biopsy specimen. Despite aggressive antifungal therapy, the patient died with disseminated disease. Physicians should be aware of this potentially lethal complication of marijuana use in compromised hosts.

Scary? You bet...even weed which does not look moldy can contain many spores of nasty stuff. better safe than sorry... :peace:

He had leukemia, which is cancer of cells primarily involved in immune function. This is a far from normal situation.

I didn't say it was a normal situation, but there is a danger to smoking moldy weed. Can you fend off the infection? I dunno, can you? Want to find out? The hard way?

Besides, what is the culling method of moldy weed? Eyesight? If your weed has mold on it, more than likely there are spores on more than what you can see. Besides that, since no one wants to lose more than the absolute minimum....do you cull enough?

Like I said, better SAFE than sorry. Why risk it?

I always grow my own weed. I never buy it. How do you know someone really took care of that weed? Do you put your weed under a microscope before you smoke it?

It's not just mold...never forget you are smoking a non regulated homegrown herb. I'm not telling you to stop smoking weed, but KNOW your source. BE your source, if you can.

Legalization will bring some of these health concerns into check. Like cig's... (cough)

I had 8 ounces in a ziplock bag for 6 weeks. It was already dried and mostly cured. I checked it every other day by opening the bag and moving stuff around.

I had no problems at all until yesterday when it started to smell a bit like weak amonia. I was like WTF? How did this happen so fast? It could have taken 2 days max to get the smell.

I laid everything out flat and checked and rechecked every bud.............nothing on them at all. I got my 30x out and looked at the biggest buds because those are the most troublesome. Nothing on them at all. I already had some mold in the past so I know what it looks like. The mold last time came quick because I didn't dry long enough. It didn't even smell like amonia.

This time the buds were perfect. No probelms until now. 6 weeks after dry/cure and I get this weak amonia smell........no mold that I could see. So I left them out overnight and the smell is gone. WTF?

Could the mold have possibly been just starting? If so, why after 6 weeks? Maybe where I kept it? Anyone have a decent place where they store their extra weed? I live in a warm humid climate....sucks.

You say you kept them in plastic bags... not the best choice. Get mason jars...glass is your best friend.
You didn't say WHERE you kept the bags... The best place is in a cool dark environment. Once in jars, you can put them in the fridge which is cool and dehumidified. Open them up every day, especially in the beginning. Mold can form at ANY time. :peace:

How did you dry your weed? Not in the bags I'm sure (?). :peace:
