We're #1. . . . . in dead kids. . . . . .

I heard this on NPR yesterday. A study of the 2016 numbers of kids, age 1-19.

From the NPR story:

The major cause of death in children aged 1 to 19 years is not cancer or other another medical condition. It's injury. And by a long shot – 61 percent, versus 9 percent for cancer.

The largest cause of injury was motor vehicle crashes, and next was firearms, according to a study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study sorts through the 20,360 deaths of U.S. children and adolescents in 2016, as counted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Assuming those 1M kids had been born, and a certain number of them would have died at similar rates, cars would have still been the winner. SUV's kill more kids than any other kind. Because everyone buy's SUV's because they are so safe. Ironic.

Wonder how many were from texting/devices and driving or over loaded speeding car.

Really sad for all causes.

Teens are terrible drivers at the best of times. Add more teens, loud music and phones, it is a wonder any of them get home in one piece. But small kids are killed when their mothers are driving. The more soccer games you go to, the bigger the odds of dying on the road.

My sister worked for a Doctor when she lived in Colorado. His family drove Range Rovers. His wife and kids got in a wreck on the Interstate. The SUV flipped and burned, killing his son. The man was never the same after that. He gave up practicing medicine. You know each death effects a whole family. That's 20K families a year grieving a dead child.

America is #1 in lots of great things, like incarceration rates, adults who believe in angels and the 'defense' budget.

I used to think that self driving cars would be a menace. Now I'm convinced that lives will be saved even if they're only a little bit better, on average, than humans.

They will be much safer than human drivers. But will be the death of the roadside hotel trade.

Possibly. I think that the need for accommodations won't change much and might even increase due to more people traveling because it isn't so physically demanding.
