weird smell

Just a quick question. I just got done with my first grow and I am curing now. When I open my jar the mj has a weird arouma. Almost like wet hay if anyone knows what that smells like. When I grind it it smells normal. Anyone know if this is a problem or has anyone had this happen before?

I get allot of different smells from curing different strains, as long as their is no sign of mold (which hay smell I doubt) and it smokes fine then your fine.

I believe the hay smell is a sign of drying too quickly and/or too much. Do some research on it; yours is a common problem.

Isnt the hay smell the chlorophyll being decomposed out of the buds? Dried but un-cured bud tends to have this smell and taste. Keep us updated on how the cure comes along wont you? on a side note due to the forum title, my little girl is half way through flowering and the buds smell like stinky feet! There is a hint of good yummy smell deep inside but stinky feet is what it mainly is giving off. I am wondering how this will end up after curing. Anybody else has buds stink like this? Its sour diesel, not sure if the nutes (botonicare pro line) are what im smelling or what, I started feeding plain water to flush all that stuff out for harvest.

Like I said this is my first grow and dry/cure. I let it dry three days then put it in one of those air tight tuperware. The ones with the push button lid. Then i would open it every like 16 to 18 hours for 3 to 4 hours. I dont think I did it right but for this first grow I have been researching every step as I go. Bad idea btw. The smoke is ok. I dont know what im really looking for as far as a smoke. It gets me high and thats what matters. I saw some people talking about the ash color and stuff?

Don't use plastic containers. Get glass mason jars or some of the glass lock top jars. Stay away from the plastic. People have reported the plastic leaving behind a bad taste. I've never used plastic but why risk your 4 months of hard work. The hay smell is normal. My buds always smell sooo dank on the plant then smell like hay for about 5 days after they go in the jars. After around a week they start smelling the way they should. I hang dry for 3-4 days cause I live in a hot area. To keep the good smell the whole way through drying it needs to dry for a week or more in a cool dark area. But the jars should bring the smell out within a few days if you're curing right. If you can fit a hygrometer in the jar burp at 68% humidity. If you don't have one you can burp when buds are stuck together when jar is shaken. First few days I burp around once every 12 hrs. After a few days burp once a day. After a week burp once a week if buds are dry enough. Keep an eye on them and use your judgment. Don't want to lose it to mold.

Yes you are wrong. He never mentioned trichome color? If anything he took it too early, they develop a richer more robust aroma when its over..keep curing it'll come, just don't over dry or the cure won't work too good.. not flushing and a bad trim can contribute as well.

Majority of the time the grassy/hay smell is from chopping too EARLY.
It could also be that they completely dried in that 3-4 days which is too fast.
You can prolong the dry if you don't trim until after it dries in 7-10 days(depending on temp/humid.)

Even Jarring up buds before they are completely dried can bring a grassy chlorophyll smell.

Hard for others to know exactly what the problem is without more info/picture of bud.

So i think everyone is correct. I had a total of 5 plants. 3 short riders AF, 1 Northern lights AF, and 1 wonder women AF. I have harvested all three short riders. I harvested them at 7-8 weeks. The first two pics are of the last plant i harvested. Just did it yesterday. The next two are buds that smell. I harvested them at 7 weeks. the second two pics i dried in my cabinet which is i think the biggest problem. 85 degrees which i gather is too hot to dry. the first two pics i harvested yesterday and have them drying in my closet. 65 and very low humidity. this one smells a lot better. i am getting mason jars today. the rest of the pics are the two remaining plant. The trics on the first three plants are hard to tell. I have a 60x-100x microscope. I dont see any amber trics but i cant tell if they are clear or cloudy. i have seen pics on here of all three i just cant determine. the trics on the last two look clear-cloudy but i think i am going to give them another week or two.

hope this helps. first pics i have uploaded so we will see how it turns out

@NoucheBag : Drying - 45-55% H and 65-75 F, no light, fan circulating air around but not on buds, until the stem no longer bends (or till it "snaps"). That will not take 3 days, more like 7-10 days. So what you're curing is super wet. You should definitely read up on how to cure w/ glass mason jars. Google it and read one of the older articles (w/ the shitty 90's webpage style) they won't lead you wrong. If your buds smell like Ammonia when you burp them (I burp for 40 minutes twice a day man) then you're shit is too wet and you need to just dry it out; otherwise, keep on keepin on (in glass!) - I don't use a hygrometer.... and maybe it would benefit me, but I cure my buds very well w/o one so I don't have one.

-- TIP --

When curing in mason jars. Flip the flat metal lid of the screw-on top upside down; this creates a slight bit of ventilation in the jar so they're not 100% sealed in.

I have another question about harvest. This is for a norther lights strain. I have been watching my trics and the look cloudy as hell. I am also starting to see some amber but not to many. The hairs on the buds are still mostly white and the fan leaves look healthy. Do I harvest now or wait till the hairs turn brown

The first one has a ways to go. The second pic I would give it a week or two?? Idk you made it sound like it was the same plant.. either way not done

They are at week 8. This is my first time so I don't expect they will get much bigger. All the trics are cloudy so that's why I asked. I would rather have a small potent grow than huge weak shit

I and they are the same plant. All the other plants I harvested were about this size. But they all had a weird hay smell which is why I started this thread. Maybe they were all just harvested too soon?
