Week 2 Preflower, general questions

Being in week 2 of preflower now I notice there is so much growth under the canopy getting very little light if any. Should I be pruning it off a little at a time or should I just wait until week three when I plan to do a full defoliation?

Also Im not really sure how ppm works if someone could try and explain it to me? how important is it in soil?

One last thing what height should i have the light at during preflower and flower? close as possible or high as possible?

Right on for the help guys. IMG_9862.JPG IMG_9864.JPG IMG_9867.JPG IMG_9863.JPG IMG_9865.JPG IMG_9831.JPG

What king of light Are you running? That will determine height. Ppm, ec, tds are all the same thing, parts per million, total disolved solids and electrical conductivity. 3 different ways to tell you the concentration of your nutrient solution. What kind of soil? Are you using bottled nutes? Also, this is more of a general growing question. Dosnt bother me but may get more traffic and better response over yonder

I'm running a 630w cmh in a 5x5

Using a few nutes
Advanced nutrients 2 part
Superthrive
Kelp and fish fertilizer
Silica
Calmag

Fox farms soil in 6..other 4 are in coco

I get how ppm works in correlation to more nutes higher ppm lower with more water. But is there a max out zone on feeding them? Can you hit them with 2500ppm? does that really do much more then giving it 1000 consistently? That's the part that confuses me. All these feeding charts have ppm ranges for each week. I also understand you don't want to give a brand new cutting 3000ppm of nutes and fry it. But what are some acceptable ranges I can store in my small memory bank for future grows?

Cmh can be very intense and has alot of uv, i would be careful to put it closer than 24", 30-36" is what ive been told. You made things hard for yourself in terms of feeding using the 2 different mediums. The coco will have no available nutrients in it where as the fox farms is soil, full of food, organic matter and microbial activity. Dont waste your time with the superthrive, i used to use it for cloning but have since stopped and noticed no difference. What are you using the fish fert for? The other thing to consider is your ph for the soil should be in the sixes, coco more like high fives. What are you using for water? Tap? RO? Well? City? Whats the beginning ph/ppm?

Sooooo many factors! Start with half of what the manufacturer suggests, go up from there. I would say, for a very rough average, 4-600 in veg, 1000 ish for bloom though alot of people run much higher than that. There are alot of factors in that so you should proceed with caution. If the plants seem hungry, bump it up a bit. Having 2 totaly different mediums is going to be a pain in the ass without having a good understanding of what you are working with.

Haha, so I originally was doing autopots and I didn't like results first couple weeks of veg so I threw in 6 soil plants and planned to do it separately. I have been watering them the exact same with same nutes and same everything. Plain tap water ph'd to 6.0. I have had no problems and the plants and doing awesome. The stretch this time is unreal after doing an led last run and using the cmh I can't even begin to explain how much happier I am.

I have had the cmh about 18in away and it was good I didn't get any burn or have anything weird happen.

I'm using the fish and kelp blend just as an additive. I like the idea of it in my nute mix. I also foliar feed with it too
