'We Won" .. Recreational cannabis use becomes legal in California

California has become the largest state in the US to legalise recreational cannabis use.

As of 1 January 2018, adults aged over 21 can possess up to an ounce (28 grams)

of the drug and can grow up to six marijuana plants at home.

Opponents say the law will lead to more driving under the influence of the drug

and introduce young people to drug use.

But business is eyeing what could be an industry worth tens of billions of dollars in the next few years.

'First years will be a mess'
Californians voted in favour of Proposition 64 legalising cannabis 14 months ago,

in a poll that took place alongside the US presidential vote.

Since then, a complicated patchwork of taxes and regulations has been drawn up to govern sales of the drug.

Critics say the red tape will discourage consumers, growers and retailers from leaving the state's

vast black market and only a few dozen shops have so far been approved to open.

The cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco have yet to sanction any recreational marijuana outlets.

"The first year, two years are going to be a mess," as cities agree their own regulations and supply and

demand is established, Troy Dayton told AFP news agency.

He is the CEO of Arcview, a company that analyses the global cannabis market.

He predicted there could be "crazy fluctuation in price over the first year or two".

Cannabis: Promise, risk and controversy

Cannabis and vaping more popular than smoking among US teens

Nonetheless, the potential rewards are huge in the US's wealthiest and most populous state.

In 1996, California was the first state to legalise marijuana for medicinal use.

But Arcview estimates the illegal cannabis market is currently worth an annual $5.1bn (£3.8bn)

and once legalised could be worth $5.8bn by 2021.

Legal buyers in the newly created "adult use" market will also now have to pay state,

sales and municipal taxes which it is estimated will generate $1bn per year.

They will be prohibited from consuming the drug in public places, with 1,000 feet (300m)

of a school or while driving.

With six US states - Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Nevada as well as California

- having legalised cannabis, one in five Americans can now legally purchase the drug.

Despite this, the federal government still regards marijuana as illegal, classifying it alongside

heroin and cocaine as a proscribed substance.

I believe Modesto , Riverside and Fresno counties will not be allowing legal rec. :(
Congratulations California!! Last west coast to Legalize it... kinda pathetic .. fear mongering and paranoia, it’s bullshit . Looking forward to seeing how creative the new California pot shops get! Maybe prices will go down now in Oregon rec shops . ?? Top shelf 1 gram flower $13-$16 even with over 50 shops in the small city of Eugene Oregon.

It took so long to legalize in Cali because a lot of the dispensaries were against it, and put a lot of funding into keepin it illegal.

What country isn't fucked?

Greed and consumerism always take a shit on global leaders. I mean look what happened to Rome at its height, then Great Britain. Did you know that Great Britain was once the global powerhouse but then they lost a war to a bunch of colonist which slowly deteriorated their vast hold on their empire? But I'm pretty sure both Rome and Great Britain are still around doing well.

Time is circular and all things repeat. Right now things are crazy over here but tomorrow shit will be crazy where you live. It's all a matter of time.

I doubt the price will go down here in oregon. Too many people growing middies/outdoor flooding the market with cheap mid grade buds so the top notch will always fetch a premium. Not enough people grown grade A weed, now they all say they do but they don't.

Large crops of outdoor bud will never be as good as small batch indoors.

This is why humans are fucked. Everyone is waiting for some deity but that shit is just not logical. People cling to religions like they cling to their prescription pills.

All religions are myths, why is that so hard for people to conceive. There literally has been over 5,000 religions throughout time and I guess only the religions that are still around are right because why else would they still be around? Right.

But you are correct sir, people are the issue. That's why I pray to Giant Meteor to come and take us back to star dust, lol. Cheers man

Isn’t that the truth! there is so much crap being shelved in the stores. I only shop at Eugene OG . I have shopped all around...They are the one place I have found consistenty. they keep the same quality strain on their shelves being grown by the same farm year after year. Very difficult to find that kind of marketing around here . Most of the pot shops have different growers shelving the same strain . It’s fucking crazy!! I might find a killer crazy insane strain and go back to get more. It’s all gone and never comes back but is replaced with the same strain name different grower and it Sucks!!

I am from the country that makes the BBC, shit hits the roof if its not impartial but i agree our country has lost a lot of what makes us great.

I hate any control over weed except by true stoners and thats a badge that needs to be packed rolled and smoked hard. Truth be told i miss this being just ours with all the freedom and liberty that stealth underground illegal growing brought.

Who hasnt jumped on this wagon for everything but love of being on a higher plane. Yes i cut through your movements but i thought you would hold out for true legality not a halfway house with plant count and max gramage.
