Way to go, Portland! So now what?

Baby steps, I wish all of the information that is coming out these days concerning MMJ, and all of the people willing to voice their opinions, had been this active in the 70's. We could have saved a ton of $ fighting the sure-to-lose war on drugs.

Damn, I came here to high five my friends in Maine and now I'm skeptical. Portland Police Chief, who is in command of law enforcement officers in the City of Portland, says he will enforce State of Maine law. The chief's gonna continue charging people - sounds like a bull sh!t vote. How's the relationship between the Chief and the Mayor and/or City Council up there? Courts, lawyers, drug treatment joints, drug labs, etc. make their living on people getting pinched for weed. Maybe the chief's protecting them when he should be serving the people of Portland.

Not hardly. The police chief has vowed that his officers will uphold state law.

"They" aren't going to allow anything. It changes nothing according to police chief.

hmmm....I will be curious myself on that one tet....the power of the people have spoken...It'll up to Lepage and see what he's gonna do about it...will he recognize the will of the people??

Hopefully LePage will have nothing to do with it. The push for state legalization will be 2016 and I hope LePage is long gone by then.

It doesn't sound like many people get busted in Portland for under 2.5 oz. Something like 50 a year. I don't think the cops will start hassling more people now.

Most heavy cannabis users over 21 in Maine are already medical marijuana paitents.

The ordinance legalizes possession of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana by adults age 21 and older within city limits.
It does not legalize the sale or purchase of marijuana, but allows anyone 21 or older to “engage in activities for the purposes of ascertaining the possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.”
It prohibits recreational use of marijuana in public spaces, on school grounds or on transportation infrastructure, and lets landlords prohibit tenants from using marijuana on their property.

What the hell does "engage in activities for the purposes of ascertaining the possession" mean exactly?
Anyone?

This calls to mind something I read in a Mad magazine decades ago: give government of the people, by the people and for the people back to the people.

I have a couple patient slots opening up. I am not really in the Portland area, but I head down that way a couple times a month.

You people of Portland need to take action and get that police chief fired! How dare he go against the law, your tax dollars pay him to serve you and uphold the law...

Baby steps. Big victory for our movement but state law usurps the ordinance and sounds like your sheriff is treating this as just fluff which it really just is. Same exact thing happened in Denver a few years ago. Good to see this happening to my friends on the other coast.

Hey kolz, I have an open patient spot and am in Portland. 100% legal, 100% professional, 100% best meds in portland. Let me know if you want to talk.

The city police would required to enforce the law of 2.5 oz possession, but Sheriffs and State police would not.
