Water Filter's for tap water

I use tap water and fill up a 50 gallon res to hold my water..I have a couple airstones always bubbling in the bottom and I let it sit long enough for the chlorine in my water to evaporate.
I have heard using water softeners are bad to water plants with and I was wondering about the filter I use. I bought a water filter to run the tap water through.. Called a camco water filter from walmart..The specs say the filter reduces bad taste, odors, chlorine and sediment in drinking water with a 100-micron fiber filter..Is this fine or does this fall in the water softner category.

sounds fine. a softener needs to be filled with salt and is large, 3 or 4 ft tall.
