Hi Guys :)

This is a warning for Euro members of RiU

I found this on another site and thought it maybe of interest to RiU members

This is a warning to mainly UK/Europe since it is basically happenning there, but it is useful information for everyone to be aware of.

http://www.ukcia.org/library/contam/default.php has the full story including youtube links, which are worth watching.

The easiest way to identify Grit Weed is to lick your finger and then put it into the bag of green. Then lick your finger again, if it crackles, then it most certainly is shitty grit weed. DO NOT SMOKE IT!!!

This is the health warning given by the UK government:

Title:
CONTAMINATION OF HERBAL OR 'SKUNK-TYPE' CANNABIS WITH GLASS BEADS

Broadcast Content:

To: Directors of Public Health of PCTs to forward to:

All GENERAL PRACTITIONERS - please ensure this message is seen by all practice nurses and non-principals working in your practice

- Project manager/Nurse lead in Walk in Centres
- Lead nurses in PCTs
- PCT Pharmaceutical Advisers to forward to community pharmacists

Alert - contamination of herbal or 'skunk-type' cannabis with glass beads

1. The Department of Health has recently received information suggesting that batches of herbal and 'skunk-type' cannabis have been contaminated with microscopic glass-like beads (or possibly ground glass). Laboratory testing has since confirmed a number of cases from a number of different parts of the country, in which cannabis appears to contain microscopic particles of glass. We have no information on other types of cannabis such as resin.

2. Reports, unconfirmed, suggest that smoking this contaminated cannabis, has been linked with complaints by users of sore mouth, mouth ulcers, chesty persistent coughs, and a tight chest lasting a few days after use.

3. Government advice already makes clear that cannabis is a substance harmful to health. The risk of glass contamination adds an additional layer of risk of harm. Whilst the exact potential health harm from this contamination is not yet fully determined, inhaling hot glass into the mouth, throat, or into the lungs should clearly be avoided.

4. In the current circumstances, the Department of Health advises that smokers of herbal and 'skunk-type' cannabis, in particular, should exercise caution.

5. For any patients presenting with concerns about their health after having smoked cannabis which may have been contaminated, or who may benefit from opportunistic health advice due to an identified high risk of cannabis use, the following advice may be useful:

a) Whilst there are no reported serious health effects to date from this contamination, we are not yet able to determine fully what are the possible or likely risks to the health of cannabis smokers.

b) There are anecdotal reports of some cases of the development of sore mouth, mouth ulcers, chesty persistent coughs and a tight chest lasting a few days, after smoking cannabis.

c) To avoid the risk of contaminated cannabis completely, patients should be advised to stop smoking cannabis.

d) If patients feel unable to stop, they should limit use as much as possible.

e) If patients continue to use, they should be warned, if any particular supply of cannabis that they have access to appears to have caused irritation to their mouth or airways, or if they suspect it is contaminated (e.g. due to grittiness when rubbed between moistened fingers), they should stop using that supply, or trading it, immediately; and they should not use any more cannabis from the same source.

f) Patients can be advised that self-help assistance with quitting cannabis can be located at the following website: www.talktofrank.com

6. The Department of Health will be making similar information directly available to the public, and to drug user networks, through a range of communication channels shortly after this alert has been sent to the NHS.

7. In addition, as part of the advice made directly available to the public, cannabis smokers will be advised that if they have particular symptoms and concerns about their health after smoking potentially contaminated cannabis, they may wish to discuss symptoms with their general practitioner. If exceptionally they believe they have an urgent problem and cannot access their general practitioner, they may consider they require assessment at an accident & emergency department.

8. As any further relevant information becomes available, the Department of Health will update this advice to practitioners.

This document has been authorised by the Department of Health: Gateway reference no: 7708 "

Yet another argument for legalisation....

I hope that this is the right area of the site to warn people about this.

This shit weed has been around for years, got my hands on some once, luckily a friend of mine let me know what it was when i was about to smoke it. Makes me sad, Its people who produce this kind of shit that gives cannabis such a bad name here in france, the majority of people here smoke hash (Shit hash i might add also laced with wood shavings etc).

this issue will be rbought into the public attention a bit more with the recent nick clegg initiative of loosing pointless laws

c) To avoid the risk of contaminated cannabis completely, patients should be advised to stop smoking cannabis.

d) If patients feel unable to stop, they should limit use as much as possible.
i think it would be a lot easier to replace both solutions with "grow your own" :)

change is a cummin!!!!!

Def. an interesting read..

glad I didn't smoke any of that. ;)

Did any of you?? Er, well.. actually none of you would really know for that matter, rather or not you smoked it. Those little beads they mention in the article.. are very very very small. In fact, you can't see them with the naked eye. They're about the size of a grain of dust. If not even smaller than that.. so yeah none of us would have even know about this if it wasn't for the people that wrote the article.

But how do we even know that this actually happened??

Just mo.

peace..

Tip Top has it right. Grow your own, or know your grower(s). Street weed has too many variables in my opinion.

lol

people should be allowed to grow, they can't be stopepd from smoking it, so where's the sense in thinking they should stop them growing it. it's the restriction on home growing that is causing a bunch of the health concerns these people are harping on about

Microscopic glass beads?

Am I the only one who calls that shit sand?

A dude hooked me up with a nug when I was at the beach a few weeks ago and I just slipped in my trunks for a while since I was swimming. Man! Did I dodge a bullet or what!? If I had gotten any microscopic glass beads on it, I may have suffered horrendous symptoms such as a sore mouth or a chesty persistent cough temporarily.

Stop feeding and spreading the retarded scare tactics, people.

sand is not microscopic glass beads. you are kind of a moron if you think that for real. you must be one of the
nipples selling the tainted weed, or else why would you be defending them?

I may be kind of a moron, but you should have waited for me to say something else to point that out on. I doubt it would have taken long.

The resulting glass contains about 70 to 74% silica by weight and is called a soda-lime glass.[8] Soda-lime glasses account for about 90% of manufactured glass.

see also quartz sand.

I fail to see an appropriate reason for your response.

Anyways, you missed the original point. Let's assume for the sake of argument that it's terribly nonsensical to think of microscopic glass beads as sand (and not the other way around as you claim I said. Yes, there is a difference).

I wasn't defending them, if anything I was scolding them. I disagreed with it and tried to show the idiocy of the letter. Why are you supporting and defending what the (not mine) government is saying by jumping on me for calling out their bullshit? They don't even want you to smoke pot, and right now, I'm thinking a big ole hog leg might help you.

I'm sorry you couldn't see the letter for what it is, a pathetic scare tactic. Ever heard of Reefer Madness! Seriously, the only fix they offer is to stop smoking pot or smoke as little as you can. It's an old government technique called propaganda. Look it up sometime. The symptoms are minimal and things people have been getting since the break of dawn from smoking schwag or just over doing it.

This is just the flavor of the month that's going to be spread around by people who don't take five seconds to think for themselves, and all it's going to do is increase the amount of people trying to cut weed since at least one person out there will say, "Damn, that's a good idea.

Then again, I saw a guy put his shirt over his hand before he touched his money and the door handle at the gas station the other day. Some folks are just scared of everything, so I guess this pathetic scare tactic will have some effect.

you think this a hoax or a scare tactic?
do some research.

This contaminated weed is very real and very available.. I've yet to meet a smoker who has nto come across some of this type of crap. It is both a scare tactic and information.

And this "flavour of the month" well it' been around for years..

Maybe you'll actually realise that this is a GOOD thing, it is fuel for our pro-growing debate.. It only works as a government tool if they have a ralistic ability to stop people smoking. They will never stop people smoking so they know that now they are just giving reason for home growing.

I think it has turned itself into something akin to a scare tactic. Fear mongering and scare tactics are usually started or unintentionally spread by the people who do NOT benefit from them. Those are cliche, type-cast words, for lack of wanting to explain it in detail.
It's kind of like feathers just flying out of the chicken coop with the hens jumping around in garbled squawks, and there's not a dog in sight.

I don't doubt that this has happened before, and I never implied that (or meant to, if that's what anyone took from it). I believe it to be carried in the same manner as an urban legend. It's an interesting story that keeps your attention by playing with peoples' fears while there really is no immediate danger. It is sand. Go spend the weekend in the desert and you will accrue more sand in your lungs than a year of smoking gritweed.

...But it's heated! So is the smoke and spit from a joint. It's not molten, but if it is when you smoke it, stop lighting your weed with cutting torches.

do some research.
Just remember, his name is Kettle, not Black.

By the way, looking through things, many people seem to agree that it is material from a sandblaster. I forget what they call the material in those things that actually does the blasting...

the idea of inhaling hot glass

People are getting that phrase or one like it stuck in their heads and it carries automatic negative connotations. What are the symptoms again? I've had everyone of them at one time or another from smoking weed pre-1996 (first reported cases).

By the way, I never had to have anybody tell me that if a bag of weed made my throat hurt, don't buy that weed again.

It's like when I hear about somebody getting shot over weed. Ignorant people with no knowledge or experience with weed automatically associate the two and even blame the pot. Yeah, it's shitty to get cut in your sack, but this is turning into another of those rumors that spreads false information about weed. It feeds the ignorant people who vote against legalization and/or decriminalization.

It does work. The government has created and milked existing propaganda for years. Why do the think weed is illegal in the first place? Back in the day, little old ladies that would swear by their canna-tinctures, but cuss, damn, and demonize the Marihuana from those dirty Mexicans with Poncho Villa.

If you've never heard of this guy, you'll probably find this a very interesting read. His book should still be free on his website.

Let's all do him a favor and try to think for ourselves once more today than we did yesterday.
