Hi fellow smokers I'm growing cheese cuttings in a tent with a 600w hps and I've read a few people saying that they switch the lights off for 30 hours when they switch from a 18/6 to a 12/12 ??

What does this do? And is it worth me doing it???

Any help appreciated thanks

well, in my opinion.. thats not going to do anything except stress the plant.

and seeing that it would stress the plant.. rather than be beneficial to it.. I would say it wouldn't be a good idea considering the plant is about to show you sex once under 12/12. The transition wouldn't be good.. and would also cause more hermie (male plants) to form.

thats what my experience tells me anyhow.

good luck with that..

peace.

In theory this allows the plant more time to produce the hormone within the plant that causes flowering and in doing so, giving the plant a jump start.

I do 24 hrs darkness when I switch from 20/4 to 12/12. Altering the light for that time isn't enough to stress the plant at all.

Cannabis plants are photo period plants, not counting auto-flowering strains of course, and when the amount of daily light grows shorter, 12 hours or less, hormones are released to induce flowering. The idea of a period of darkness is to speed up the release of the hormones that begin flowering since it is not something that fully occurs on the first or second day where plants receive 12 hours or less of light, it takes a bit of time. The idea is to speed it up, to give it a jump-start of sorts.

I have never attempted it so I cannot speak from experience but I have read where some people claimed their plants began to produce flowers faster and others have claimed there saw no speeding up of flower production at all. It might possibly be something that falls into the category of strain dependent reactions and it might be a myth, an urban legend of sorts or old hippie folklore but if it works at all it appears that it does not work for all strains, or at the least not equally well for all strains, and possibly not at all for others.

Agreed
Some growers believe an extended dark period before going 12/12 speeds up the plant going in to flower. A bit of a kick start to flowering.

i've done it both ways .. from 24/0 to 12/12 with a 24hr dark period and without .. i don't see any difference in the speed it begins to flower imo. but some strains like a good long dark period "3 days" just before harvest though.

the hormone is always there/produced, its broken down by light, flowering is triggered when the level builds up because of longer nights allowing the level to build up. Ive never found any benefit. it never made any of the plants ive tried it with go hermie from the 'stress'.
