Vortex, small bud pheno

I've been growing some vortex with good results, but have a couple questions for those that have seen all the pheno's.
My girl's traits are:
small buds, consisting of mostly just stacked calyxes.
fast finishing <50 days
lower buds same size as main colas
good yield of small buds

I'm used to seeing fatter buds, even with sativas.
is this fast finishing small bud plant a common pheno, or is it something I can manipulate with environment.

I'm noticing that these girls get light/heat burnt real easily, and they prefer to be a solid 12" from the glass of my vented hood.

any thoughts on how to get bigger colas out of this pheno.

600 watts.

I found that the girls could not handle being close to the light at all. the would get margin curl up, and yellow edges. this is in a room at 80 degrees max, with 1400ppm co2 and 50% humidity. Girls show no deficiency of any kind, perfectly healthy looking. no hermies.

Your descriptions and pics are very similar to a Vortex phenotype I ran for a while that I dubbed "Skunkpoo". It also had small bud structure, but it tested very high at almost 22%THC and tasted and smelled like heaven. To address your question, the only way I could get decent sized buds with her was a 60-70 day veg time, 10 gal pots, aggressive lolly-popping to encourage upper bud-size, and a top dressing (at the time I was using liquid nutes, not SS) of Happy Frog Bat Guano around day 30. Even when she was big though, I never achieved any big kolas from her. Always just perfect little gems of dankness. I had bigger yielding phenotypes of Vortex....but that is the one I will be searching for again in the future. SO DELICIOUS! bongsmilie

Here is a pic of "SkunkPoo"

I believe the above phenotype as well as bshdctr's "SkunkPoo" is actually the phenotype of choice for Vortex...as far as being the most "dank". I don't have any experience with Vortex (aside from having a ten pack of seeds sitting next to me as I type this), so I could be wrong on this.

Certainly looks dank though, and a phenotype I would not mind having around in my spot.

I tried tweaking nutes and environment to get bigger buds but had no success. gave more N and warmer nights and she responded by growing as a huge bush of popcorn buds.

I have only toked a few samples but so far I LOVE VORTEX!!! the taste is a nice lemon mango fruity citrus that is all head high. I had read that it is motivating but did not want to think to much into it and bias my high so I didnt. You smoke some vortex and you sit around for 10-20 minutes, next thing you know you are working on something on your "to do" list, but you don't notice it til you are done with the task and sit around for a few minutes... then you think "hmmm, maybe it was the vortex". At least that is my experience thus far

We found two different phenos of Vortex. One with buds similar to yours (pics below) and another with larger fluffy colas. The larger buds did not compare to the small dense buds in smell/taste/resin production AT ALL. We ended up keeping the smaller bud pheno as well. It is harder to grow than the other pheno and as you said, responds negatively to a lot of light or wind stress. She is also a much lighter feeder than the other pheno. Also, we had a fungus gnat problem for awhile while we were using Roots soil, and we treated with a combination soil drench of azamax and SNS. The small bud Vortex pheno freaked out, yellowed and its leafs curled and some even died back. The other pheno kept trucking along, dark green with no problems. Smoking the two phenos, it was no contest as to which to keep. The small buds had an overwhelming banana runt/citrus taste and smell and looked like they had been dipped in sugar, the trichromes were literally stacked on top of eachother! The larger buds were a fainter version of the other pheno but did not look nearly as nice. Since we decided to keep the smaller-bud pheno we have found some things that really help her grow to her full potential and tone down her response to stressors. We top early in veg and train the plant the entire time it is growing. We try to get the top colas bent to almost a right angle so that the plant grows more sea-of-green style. We pump it full of Silica and CaMG during both veg and flower. The silica adds strength to the cell walls and also helps to combat environmental stress like lights/fans/heat. The CaMg is really important for plant growth (and bud size) because Calcium helps the roots to develop (more roots more fruits) and the Magnesium helps to keep them from yellowing (it is the main molecule in chlorophyll). If you are not using these two supplements already in your garden, you should give them a try and see if it increases your bud size. Vortex 2 (B).jpgVortex 3 (B) Week 7.jpg

I've tried a few different things to plump up the buds on this vortex pheno. Adding extra N during early flower did not help bud size, and increased bushyness. Changing night temps did not do much. My best results are coming as a result of raising the light up higher, and adding MH to the spectrum. having the light close to the tops seem to cause the plant to rush through flowering.

my last vortex in the flower room.

Sounds like she might benefit from being grown by an LED flower light instead. Less intense lighting, fuller spectrum.
