One of the cases you learn in your bachelors of science in criminal justice is a good one: Loving v. Virginia.
It's a case you grow to love and hate at the same time. Here's the skinny: a white guy named Richard Loving was in love with a lady of color named Mildred.
Well, they had sex and it being the late 50's and contraceptives not being very wide spread at the time, Mildred got pregnant.
Old Richard was a stand up guy. He was going to marry her. Unfortunately, Virginia being Virginia, it was against the law for a white person to marry a black person. (Painting yourself up as a black person is to this day legal for whites though, so go figure.)
Anywho, Richard came up with the idea to go to D.C. and get married. Virginia state law didn't apply there, so it would be all good. Or so he thought.
After they got married and it became known to "local" (read as the nearby racist white asshole cops) authorities, they were both immediately arrested for breaking the law.
You see, it's OK and had been since the days of the colonies for a white guy to fuck a black chick all he wants...but god damnit you can't marry them!
Yeah. Sounds legit.
NOT!
Long story short (I know, too late) they appealed and it went all the way to the SCOTUS. Needless to say, it's no longer illegal for a white man to marry a black lady or vice versa.
I was at Mildred Loving's funeral in 2008. Standing about 20 feet from me was a Senator from Illinois, who would become President of the United States. Mr. Barrack Obama.
He was one of the few men there that wept more than I did.
