Well I am an outdoor man myself but from my experience outside in veg state the sun is intense. When the bud season starts the sun slowly decreases its intensity. I would say go hard on the veg and lay the watts down in two stages from intense for veg to less intense for budding. Now when plants outside start to flower the sun is still kicking ass. When the buds get sizable the sun lets up.

Don't veg under an HPS!!! It wont hurt the plants, but the spectrum of light is completely different than what is needed/desired. I would recommend fluoros, a 4 foot t5 preferably. If you want, switch them to a metal halide after 2 weeks or so under the fluoros. But i definitely don't like the reaction seedlings give to metal halides, which is usually shock or extreme stretching, due to how far the light has to be away. Get a nice t5 setup and keep it around 4 inches away from your seedling's tops, up until 2 weeks. Beyond that, look into a Metal Halide, or go ahead and flower them. But once again, an HPS is rather useless to raise plants in the vegetative stage. Hope this helps.

MH or HPS for the win - hands down. You can buy a MH/HPS setup for a Franklin and some change - don't be afraid to go "big" - overgrow!

Thanks, I do have some old t5 fixtures with the grow tubes that i use to use awhile ago, i could set those up and some cfls along with them. And i dont have mh's so those are out of the question, I have a plant now that i failed to clone but it was under two cfl lights one 68 watts that is 4000 something K and a 50 something watt 2700 that i ran on the one plant and it got pretty freaking big just of those two. Now its almost done under a 250 and 600w hps, and looking great, Ill let you know how the t5s and cfls work out for me, i will be doing a grow journal for this one.

thats a very good way to look at that. Natural proccess i can probably take out the 600w hps keep the 250w and and t5s and cfls for more wider spectrum and more watts.

I want someone to tell me that there is a distinct difference in the vegging state between these lights. it seems like only opinions. anyone actually done both? and seen the difference? i rather not google it lol, this is what forums are for :p

That's one the dumbest most uniformed "opinions" I have read. At least today. Do NOT listen to this guy if you have HPS but no halide. I just cut two indicas a couple weeks ago that yielded 2.3 and 2.7 ounces each - dry! HPS because the MH bulb was screwed.

More BS lore.

You don't have enough CFL for 10 to do anything but sprout.

BTW -had I nuted the shit out of those 2, or topped or femmed or whatever, I would have gotten more but the purpose of those 2 were a totally timed and untouched to see what unmolested plants did. For those of us who work real jobs and would like to know.

The guy who says no HPS for veg is a vegetable himself. I've raised them all. I have gotten to where I prefer high output CFL to veg at least the first month. A nice T5 setup cannot be beat because of lumens versus heat output. The T5 wins for those pf us who count a llot on automation and things not needing much intervention.

Bottom line - veg under anything but incandescents with enough lumens to cover. Switch to HID to flower if you cannot afford multiple setups running simultaneously.

SO what would you say I vegg with, what i have available(Note: i could buy more cfls if needed) Is 1-3 t5s, 600w 250w hps, and 2 58w cfls and one 68 watt cfl. Note: i will be doing a scrog. I thought i mentioned it, but it might of been on another post. And thats my goal is 2 ounces dry per plant, i have 5 gal pots and LOTS of nutes :)

You're singing my song, son. ALL the light you can throw at them without burning 'em! We save that for later. Get growing and good luck. KISS. Write me if pinheads and their minutiae start confusing you. Do it simple, do it cheap and have fun, grow good bud.

Do NOT give nutrients until you write me or chance being on here singing the "Nute Burn Blues" in a short bit.

also hotrodharley, What wattage was your hps?
I flower 6 plants in 18-gallon tubs (1 is braided and laid over or it would only be 5) under a 1000 watt HPS. I supplement near harvest with CFLs on some plants side lighting. It could be done with what you have. Especially if you add CFLs if you notice some light issues.
