They are sophisticated enough to do something right, about reefer madness, have to give them that.

Latino countries do not care about the US and its war on people (drugs). Uruguay has now told the US to suck a dick the same way Colombia told the US to suck a dick and kicked Monsanto out of the country.

Face it. The US is going to suck a lot of Latino dick in the future and will either like it or shut the fuck up. What are you going to do? Get your asses kicked like you did in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan?

I'm interested to see how this all pans out with regard to the international drug treaty given that they are still a signatory.

It is the War falling apart. It is the payola scheme unraveling, seems to me.

The International Treaties, do have some wiggle room. And I don't think it is in there about if it is legal.

The treaties are only about the illegal drugs. I'd have to look at it again. The way the Congress is looking at it, is to keep everything, but strike the phrases that are about cannabis, specifically....not that many phrases, as it turns out.

The 1961 treaty spcifies individual drugs, not simply ones which are illegal. Cannabis is included in the treaty. The drugs prohibited by the treaty can only be used or licensed for medical reason and experiments. I just read a piece which stated that the honcho of Uruguay believes he is not in contravention because the legalization is a big experiment. It will be interesting to see the UN get's it's knickers in a twist.

Hmmm...got a specific name for that particular treaty? There seems to be more that just one.

I'd like to peruse the text for the so-called wiggle room.

See Article 28 on Cannabis.

See Article 36, 1.b on Penal Codes

See Article 26 on Signatory Renunciation of the Accord

IAC, this is a UN Convention and not a Treaty. It really has no teeth unless Uruguay thinks they can legally export, somehow. I doubt that.

I really don't think they would. They put together a council a few years ago to do a study on drug laws and its affects, and the council came back with a report that the drug war was a massive failure and time to start trying other ways to control drug use.

Bare in mind the head of the UK government drug body made statements, that contradicted the governments story, he being a scientist who knew what he was doing, the government being a bunch of blithering idiots, so naturally he was sacked. Educated research and conclusions have no place in the world of politics.

Remember there is the Free World in the chains of Liberty, forced to spend massive piles of money to protect world trade and are very concerned about dopy warriors (but, is there any other kind?)

OTH, there are many countries in this world where people take a big toke and say "Coooooooooool," about all the above as they exhale.

Uruguay is one of them. :)

We will have to see what happens once the policy takes full effects

The government intends to control all aspects of the new industry, from farmer to consumer. Uruguayan citizens will be able to buy up to 40 grams a month at pharmacies, and obtain licenses to cultivate up to six plants at home. Cooperatives, known as “growers clubs,” will be allowed to cultivate up to 99 plants collectively.

A steep in the right direction YES , but far from right

The idea that a government can declare your own body off limits is repulsive. Now, they compound their past abuses by "allowing" people to have a little or by taxing them. Prohibition and related "kinda sorta legal if you kiss our ass" is a symptom of a much greater problem. Fuck them and the horse they rode in on.
