upside down plants, any benefits or problems?

I have one of those topsy turvy tomato planters that allows you to have tomatoes growing out of the top and bottom of one pot. I was wondering if growing a weed plant upside down would have any problems or benefits. Could large buds be a problem with weighing an upside down plants limbs down?

I'm probably not going to do this. I'm more interested in hydro than soil, but I'm curious.

Choose a heavy indica and grow yourself some marijuana stalactites ;-)
 
what if all the thc runs through the stem into the buds when its upside down? what if its a super potent freak?

One thing that did spring to mind upon thinking it over - all the moisture in the plant may run down to your main central cola (possibly increasing the chances of mould and rot).
 
your going to need a set of very light "Scale" weights to keep the plant growing down or it will grow sideways across the pot and back up the side.

have a friend trying this out and that is exactly how his is growing, back up the side of the pot.
 
I have seen plants that were grown upside down but I have never tried it myself and have never asked those who have precisely how they did it. I may be wrong but I believe it was FDS2Black or FTD2Black or Fdd2Black (or whatever the mod's user-name here is) who posted a picture of a rather nice looking plant that was grown upside down. I may be wrong but I believe it was him. You might want to shoot him a PM or do something to see if you can snag his attention and ask him.

Myself I would have to believe that some sort of weighting or something would be needed to keep plants growing down, something that would be able to overcome their genetic coding that causes roots to grow down and the above soil portion of plants to grow upwards.

That is why people's plants will turn upward and grow upward when upside down, just as the end of a sagging branch or entire sagging plant will turn upward once it has sagged as low as it can go. The genetic coding will always make the above soil portion of plants grow upwards and it will always make root systems grow down.
 
Sorry for my delay in answering, I was off for a few days. Anyway, as to the people saying it will grow upward. Why would it do that if I put the lights directly below the plant? Wouldn't the plant grow toward the light no matter where the light is in relation to the plant? I've never seen a plant grow away from a light source when that light source is the only or most powerful light around.

I'm glad to see someone finally took an interest in this thread. I posted it 5 days ago and didn't think anybody would respond.
 
Man, I can not remember where I saw it but I too saw a pic of a topsy mj plant that grew like a vine up and around the planter... my hubby is very interested in a grow like this...

But the light will only be on it 12 out of 24 hours right? So in the 12 hours of darkness the plant will begin to grow away from the light
 
i grew one using something just like the topsy turvy, it was overall a shit way to grow with bad results but it was a great conversation piece
