unmanageable plants

I underestimated how big they would get. I can't keep up with them anymore. I spend all weekend every weekend tying them down to keep them below the fenceline, weeding underneath them and watering them. It is exhausting. They are beastly.

2 went male so I cut all the branches in half and cut every speck of foliation off. Guess what? Those fuckers grew back bushy as hell twice! I'm using the trunks as anchors to tie my other plants to lol. I always heard that stripping it down to the stalk would kill it. Wth?? I cut the fraking branches in half as in the whole thing is a 3 foot stalk of nothingness.

My plants are so thick that I've started pruning them some. It takes me forever. What I pruned last weekend is already growing back. They're growing like weeds!
I was out in the garden all day yesterday amd all day today and I'll finish up tomorrow.
I'm sunburned as hell.

Well in this case they had to be raped. I have tied them down so much they have clumped in the middle. and I didn't completely strip them. JJust cleared out leaves for airflow and manageability

Mine is really about manageability. My hubby is getting ready to have surgery and can't do much to help me. I work all week and then go to the gym so it all comes down to weekends. I planted 12 plants but am down to 9. I live in town with neighbors on all sides and close. I have a card but I don't need the headache so I gotta keep them below the fenceline and out of view.

Hi Krspies...I am doing outdoor too but I put mine in raised beds. Try that next time. No weeding at all and I have a trellis 'lean-to' around them. I am on over an acre though so I didn't have to tie them down. ;)

My problem began when I waited too long to start tying them down. I started a new job and was traveling out of town every day and was just so tired that I put off tying them down when they were young. By the time I got started they were already 6 feet tall. I just don't have the time or energy to tie them down everyday and they were growing soo damn fast they needed to be tied down every day. Like today. I just got home and they need water but it's nearly dark and I'm just starting dinner, haven't had a shower and I'm exhausted. Needless to say they aren't getting water today.

outdoor farmer you are correct. It is hard to tell they are tied down but if you crawl under you'll see all kinds of string lol. I'm just doing what I can this year to keep from stirring up the neighbors. I tell you what though, I will never use twine again. I lost 3 or 4 big branches because the twine slowly cut through them. My preferred string is satin ribbon.
