that place is a joke. they go to the dollar general and buy shit for resale at five times the dollar. i even seen them selling those radio shack microscopes ($11) for 25 bucks. not only the price on things jeffs lady friend hands out advise that a 12 year old should know is completely off wack and jeff himself (maybe a decent business man ....maybe) is a tool and doesnt know a thing about what he sells.

with all that said they WILL do what they can to get you what you need. or what they think you need ..... but your gonna get ripped off.

I don't feel I've been ripped off there, prices at other hydro stores I've gone and checked out were worse than what they sell there. And Geoff has admitted that he doesn't know a lot about advanced nutes and what not, has never used them, but people want to buy them so he sells it. But as far as most of the things in the store (exception being the little things that I know I could get cheaper somewhere else, like plastic pots and things of that nature), I haven't had an issue with price.

Funny Sunnyside is coming up in this thread... I just visited that store for the first time the other day (i try to see all the stores in my area)

I didn't buy anything so I can't vouch for the prices but I did get to meet Geoff and he seemed like a good guy.

i really try not to knock a grow stores hustle, because they are still small business owners typically. opening new businesses especially in a bad economy, and in a new market is risky. that being said, i do keep my costs down as much as possible. i try to order everything i need ahead of time for the cheapest price available, and then rely on grow stores for incidental items.

Understandable, and a lot of things I've needed I've bought online because of the price point (wooo Amazon Prime!) and if it wasn't something that could break. The difference for me is that if a bulb / ballast / whatever craps out then it's good to know that I can just take it on over and someone will switch it out for me.

dude i went to the dollar store on 9 and gratiot and picked up these black buckets (3gal) they were a buck a piece so i grabbed 10 of em and the next day i seen them at 10 and gratiot for 5.99, and im sure they came from the dollar store. that just seems wrong imo.

Hold a flashlight up to the buckets you bought and see if they are light proof. I personally cover them in silver bubble wrap and aluminum tape any way so light proof really doesn't matter to me, but some people don't. Just an FYI.

Shame on a small business for trying to make a profit. :-?

Do you have any idea how much overhead is for a gratiot storefront? Personally I make my money online and would prefer to dump it back into our economy at a local small business, instead of sending it back to some online store. Sure I pay a premium but I can literally walk there if I need to, 7 days a week.

I am going to check out those buckets at dollar to see if they are in fact the exact same ones because I could use some more.

they are in fact the same ones, they came from there. shame ion them for gouging, your right. 50-150% markup is acceptable but not 600%. your clearly defending him based on bias. the stores a joke. you say you would prefer to dump the money in a local store rather than online ....fine, me too. but i go to one thats reasonable. in my story above you see i paid half the cost he was asking for his light setup. i didnt buy online, i went down the road to HTG, where the prices are within reason. 225 for tank and reg...330 for 1k light setup air cooled etc... another thing i mentioned before is their lack of knowledge. its one thing to operate a storefront and not know a thing about the shit but its another thing to pass out MADDDD false info about the product AND especially info on gardening. if you would like me to explain in detail what i was told by the people running that store (jeff and his lady friend) i can do that and it would be extremely embarrasing for them. lets just keep it at, its not JUST their prices that makes them "suck".

You are clearly bashing him based on personal bias/experience, due to something one of his friends/employees said, but you won't say what that is. I personally don't go to grow shops for advice, I go there to buy stuff, and I know what I want when I walk in. I don't mind paying extra for that convenience but I sure don't think I am paying extra for the sales staff's knowledge, I know better.

You mention some story about buying a light for half the price somewhere... I see no such story ITT. Where/what is HTG? How about instead of bashing sunny cuz of a bad experience you give us some advice about other/better shops that are close by?

I'm gonna agree with that.

The only place I draw the line is when
They don't know what they are talking
about and they still try to tell you how to
do it.

Now if they DO know what they are
talking about then that is a plus
but if they don't then they should
just tell you they don't know or better
yet check on it for you as a courtesy
to their customers.

But yea it can't be easy to start up and
do good these days.

lmao, thats why i changed mine:(

anyhow cheech, you have it all wrong. i have bought a few things there but i havent spent a ton of cash and i didnt have a bad experience at all. if you must know it all started when i was reading some nutes and a guy was there buying a scope and he had one there from radio shack that he was price gouging and he said it was better than the radio shack ones, but it was in fact from radio shack. the customer was like ill need a large bottle of ph down and some strips cause my ph is always too high. the guy sells him a 50 dollar set of fox farm nutes and tells him dont pay attention to the ph because it wont be neccessary anymore. he didnt even know what type of water he uses? wtf...
anyhow guy walks out without the ph and and tester but he got some nutes and a scope for 3x the price.

that got to me and ever since i have been back a few more times and everytime shit happens like that. i have more stories like that...

one incident happened to me but i had my cash replaced by jeff so nothing causing personal bias there.

your claims are way off. i simply dont like what i see everytime i go to the store. its poorly run imo and i spoke my thoughts. this is a public forum so im allowed to do it.

im sure you dont go there for advise but trust me alot of people do. and they take these peoples suggestions.

your right, i think i started to say that but deleted, idk ....

anyhow htg is a store that you can shop online, ive been buying from them (best prices) since like 08. they recently opened a store in michigan. http://www.htgsupply.com/

now are you done argueing? because like i said, im doing nothing wrong by giving out my opinion about a store front on an open internet forum.

I am pretty sure you were the one that started doing the arguing, against everyone else's opinions ITT. You weren't giving your opinion, IMO, you were just trashing a small business owner. Just another RIU member with 1k+ posts that is a total tool. It is amazing how many of you I have to put on ignore. Go have fun spamming the forum for patients to buy your meds.
