understanding your lamps

hola! I wanted to post some information i recently came across that really goes in depth in understanding MH/HPS lamps and essentially all other lights. I have been researching this for some time now to no avail, until just a little bit ago. originally i was discussing lumens and how it affected the plant growth, my thought was that more lumens means more light intensity, this turns out to not be the case and its frustrating because every lamp puts in big ol' numbers how many lumens they provide right in the box. i wanted to solve this once and for all so i set out on a quest and this is what i found.

oh also if anyone thinks that there is a more useful forum to place this let me know

Great read, thanks for sharing! This should really help the newbs better understand the properties and categories of light! +rep

I briefly looked up tl and dr bulbs and all i came up with was lights for a car. if this is where you are getting your understanding of lights then i think you are looking in the wrong places. read the information in the link and you will have a better understanding of what you should be looking for in grow lamps

i actually picked a light based upon its high lumens (which was a mistake) but i got lucky and it also says that my light provides 22% more micromoles than other lights. (btw the light is the philips agrolight xt) what this means is that the photons that the plants use most efficiently are more abundant in my light. what im planning on doing for tests is to place a 200 w MH in between two 600 w HPS lamps in my flowering room. my theory is that the little amount of blue specrum being introduced by the MH in my flowering room will better imitate the sun thus resulting in higher yields. that's just a theory thought and i have much testing to do, not to mention i have to perfect my nutrient blends at the same time.

"tl:dr" is forum shorthand for "too long:didn't read". Good info at that link Fa Fa.
