Understanding CFM (speed controllers)

I'm using a fan rated 315 CFM with a carbon filter rated 400 CFM.. can I dim the fan down to 35% with the speed controller?

I don't fully understand how CFM works with carbon filters. At 35%, the fan is only pulling about 110 CFM through the 400 CFM filter. No problem, or should I crank the fan's speed up?

"To calculate multiply length x width x height of growing area e.g. A room that is 8' x 8' x 8' will have a volume of 512 cubic feet. Your extraction fan should be able to adequately exchangethe air in an indoor garden once every three minutes. Therefore, 512 cubic feet / 3 minutes = 171 CFM."

hey
i had a state trooper next door to me when i started i learned alot about this

if the filter is made for a 400CFM then u should only use a 400 cfm ........it is do to the path of least resistance if u use a under powered fan on a filter it will go the path of least effort not fully using all of the carbon u cut the life down filter u will get about 7 months 8 at best before notice a smell ( out of a 12 15 month normal life)

to help u there if u are USA this is best answer
https://www.ebay.com/usr/foothill-carbon-filters?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

they sell refillable filters .......instead of replacing the whole unit u just dump out old carbon and add new active carbon (15 bucks)

as the guy said before u have the math to do your area CFM u can basically find what ever u need here from that ( as for the fans 4 inch booster fans are 100cfms 6 inch booster fans are 240 cfms 4 inch inline fans are 180cfms 6 inch are 400 cfms) ......a speed controller will only work on inline fans not the boosters

IIRC the most you can reduce speed is 50%...the fan will start making growling noises below that. If you need to reduce that much, the fan is oversized for the job.

For some reason its popular on the forum right now to underpower fans. I disagree strongly with this trend.
Try to match your fan cfm to your filter, and use the largest ones you can at all times. For a 4x4x7 tent I always use a 8 inch fan that moves about 750 cfm. That's matched to a 750 cfm carbon filter. You'll have to find what works best for you, but when it comes to air movement and odor control I think its risky to do the minimum

8" fan for a tent...lol.

6" 440cfm doing double duty. This was enough most of the time. An 8" fan on a speed control and reduced to 6" on the exhaust was perfect...in Toronto anyways. If you live in Death Valley...maybe not.

Like I said its popular to undershoot everything around here now days. I also see more people who cant properly use HID lighting than ever before. Those dont even look like thousands, probably 600s.
Anyways I def expected someone to run up an defend the minimum.

I dont think it's a waste of money to be safe and properly filter the air. The differance in power draw for a 8 inch fan vs a 6 inch fan in minor. Maybe 5 bucks a month on your power bill. Dont make me laugh...

What's your picture show? A area where light spills out everywhere. Talk about wasting money? I dont think that's the kind of photo you want to post and claim to know what your doing.
I know you been a member for a long time so hopefully you know better than what is shown in that photo and these comments.

The picture shows an adequate fan/filter combo also cooling 2000w of hps in 6" hoods. The room is 6' x 10' ish. I took the temp wall down to take the picture...some time ago.

Lets see your tent that needs an 8" exhaust fan ;)

Adequate, aka, the minimum. Whatever your happy with go with it I guess. You probably dont change out your bulbs very often an shit too.

Ya..just enough like I said in regards to cfm. The filter was 5 years when I replaced it though. Only needed more cfm to deal with heat in peak summer and a little less in peak winter.

Lol...I probably did run my bulbs longer than most until I switched to cheapo bulbs.

I can't believe the crap info you're getting fed so far.

Always get a filter rated higher than your fan rating for best odor control! Not to mention less work for your fan to pull air thru it.

The slower air passes thru a filter the more time the carbon has to absorb odors. I got a 600cfm filter last year and plan to use it with my 400cmf fan throttled back to to 200cfm. I'll leave half the plastic wrap on so it's basically a 300cfm filter with a 200cmf fan pulling thru it.

Once it starts letting stink thru I'll wrap plastic around the bottom half and let air thru the top half for another 2 or 3 years use out of it. A year so far and it's still sitting in the box all sealed up and brand new. Decent unit too with 100% virgin Australian charcoal. My last two crops weren't smelly enough to bother setting it up.

Canfilter30.jpg

Another issue to think about is air exchange. To say you need X number of air exchanges per unit time is bullshit.

You need to have enough airflow to maintain heat and RH at optimum levels for your plants while keeping CO2 levels close to ambient unless using CO2 supplementation. These days 400ppm is ambient.

To aid with that I have my 6" inline exhaust fan connected to a Temp/RH controller that feeds it's power to a speed controller. That way my exhaust fan only comes on when the temp or RH exceeds my settings. It's just a simple bathroom fan controller wired to a cheap heat/cool thermostat wired on the cool side then piped to the speed controller which is a self-wired ceiling fan controller. Do not use a light dimmer for speed control!

FanControl.jpg

Now depending on your temps and RH you may not get enough fresh air into the room to keep plants supplied with enough CO2. For most that's not a problem as too much heat keeps their exhaust fan running all the time bringing in lots of CO2. My grow room is in a concrete bunker underground and I always need heat unless I'm running a 1000W HPS. Once it's light's out I have a heater on a thermostat to keep it from getting too cold in there. Almost the end of July and the basement outside the grow room is barely 63F and that's where my grow room draws its filtered air from. Was 85F in the house today.

Last year for almost $300 I bought a simple CO2 controller but haven't had enough spare cash to buy a tank of CO2 but still can use it to monitor CO2 levels. Found out that just burning a candle in a 500 cubic ft room can get the CO2 up over 1500ppm in 20 min if the exhaust fan is off. Sitting in the same room working on the plants for a half hour does the same! I made a couple of alcohol lamps to burn cheap methyl hydrate, aka wood alcohol, and get the CO2 well over 1500 in 10 - 15 min.

CO2Controller03.jpg
AlcoholLamp4CO20x.jpg
If it's cold and the exhaust fan won't kick in then I fire up that sucker to keep the CO2 up to at least ambient levels. To keep it safer I have it contained in the grow room. I have smaller ones too.

AlcoholLamp4CO2.jpg

As you can see by the childish arguments hijacking your thread above this post most of these 'pros' really don't have a clue but like arguing about their own ignorance. I went back to school on my 30s for 3 years to earn a diploma in environmental chemistry so not everything I say comes out of my ass. ;) The thousands of hours I have well wasted growing and studying cannabis gives me confidence in sharing my knowledge as well.

Good luck with your grows and grab a few of these books while the link still works.

I found a great spot to download FREE POT BOOKS. I downloaded a grow bible first and got lots more. Books look great and complete like the real ones I have here. No web site but just a page of links. Just right click on what you want and then "Save Link As" to download so they don't open first as some are 50+ megs. They got lots. Enjoy.

Just as I figured... cheap bulbs as well. Your focused on the minimum.
Do yourself a favor an get yourself a brand new hortilux super hps an compare the results.

When doing the minimum you'll get by. When you adjust your standards your results will reflect that.

None of this mis-information is helpful to a newer grower or anyone else for that matter.

So many threads are messed up by basically wrong information generating more wrong information.

Kind of an endless loop of thread hijacking.

You all might be right for YOUR particular grow environment but in this thread we are dealing with somebody elses unique environment so fighting about particulars just confuses the issue and is worse than no help at all.

I've been a member of many forums for a decade and a current Admin of one. This is the only forum where I see so much controversy about so much trivial crap.

"Best to remain silent and be thought an idiot than speak up and remove all traces of doubt."

Or as my old man used to say. 'If you got nothing useful to say then don't say nothing'

Bro you said your pulling 63f air an you've got a concrete bunker. Saying its low 80s outside. Ok bud. Enjoy your Simi sealed low temps weather.
I'm running 1kw an it's over 100f during the day an still 80 at midnite. Some people have to actually cool their grow space.
I need my air so clean it cant be smelled on the other side of the door.

Maybe you can get by with what your doing. Not everyone has the luxury of not having to rely on air exchange for cooling and having PERFECT odor control.

Just my 2c from what I experienced.
In a 10 x 10 x 8 room using about 4 x 7 to grow.
I had the cheap $70 6 x 24" filter paired with a 400 cfm inline and it worked OK.
I changed to a $110 6x12" pfresh filter and it works great.

@redi jedi your picture is a bit blurry but it looks like the filters cover hasn't been cleaned in ages.

Exactly what I spoke about.

You have a totally different grow scenario and can't project your particular solutions onto another different situation.

My odor control is far from perfect. During the winter here we get totally dead air when it's -30C outside. My exhaust air exits under my shop and just flows across the yard. When I've grown stinky strains it's so f'n obvious that I'm growing pot. We don't have skunks up here in northern Alberta so I can't blame them like I used to do back in the Fraser Valley in BC. :D

The wife sells eggs so we have all sorts of strangers driving in to my small acreage, Talk about being paranoid!

I got a med card for 8g/day but I'm not legal for a single plant. Up here in Bumf**k Alberta the local cops would rip my place apart if they thought I had a single plant growing and I have 9 mom's vegging with at least 18 new plants about to sprout. Want to take around another 18 or more clones from the moms to get my breeding program in high gear. CBD everything! lol

It's not you or anyone in particular but the general lack of consideration for basic polite social intercourse that pervades this forum. If I had to point a finger it would be at the Admin/Owner. As I said I'm an Admin at another pot forum and I'd be slapping warning points on a lot of posters that hijack threads with trivial fights. Time outs next and bans after that. A lot of posts I see around here would get bans right off but seem to get ignored by Admin. I'm no rat so don't go reporting on anything that's not purely spam.

We have downvotes along with the upvotes which would go a long way to curtail thread bashing here but no such luck.

If what I said in a post got me a lot of unlikes I'd likely be more prudent about my future posts. ;)
