My family is Native (Yupik Alaskan) and enjoys gathering fiddle head ferns at the start of the growing season. After they are cleaned, they are put into salad, stew, omelets, etc.

On this trek, my daughter found a Twin!

Fiddle Heads have a distinct flavor. I would say its more like spinach then other greens. It would depend on how you prepared them however, boiling seems to change the flavor enough to make them palatable for most anyone. The key is cleaning off all the "fuzz". That’s time consuming!

I am not sure what you mean by "same law". State law? We are under state law, unless federal law says otherwise. If your pertaining to tribal law, it depends on where you are, but tribal law still carries weight in court if your in violation.

I was just wondering if all the counties in Alaska followed the state law the same way. There are some issues in Cali with regard to different counties. I think some places may just be having issues with local cop's interpretation of the law.

Fiddle heads sound like my kind of thing. I love greens and eating things picked from the wild is awesome as well,.. although it's probably an every day occurrence for you. Living on the east coast, I don't get much of an opportunity to do that.

Have you grown AUH#2 before? I've got #1 and was thinking about cracking some beans soon. I've heard mixed reviews lately about GHS, although always mostly positive, and i've got their super lemon haze as well. The thing is, I've also got some TGA gear and their stuff is dank and at the top of my list for my next grow. I was just wondering what your experience has been with the GHS medicine.

Judging by your pics,.. I might have to toss a few the version of Arjans i have into the mix.

Hey woodmanstoker, your thread is looking great my friend. I visited Alaska once when I was 14. Went salmon fishing for 5 days near Bristol Bay in July and I swear there was enough light at 3am to read by. Looks like your living the dream out there off the grid, your plants look wonderful as well. I just recently started a White Rhino garden, working a couple different outdoor patches as well an indoor 3 plant scrog under flouro tubes. Excellent information on the phenotypes, and I am suprised that none of the moderators have picked up on this thread. I am interested to follow along and see all of your progress and curious to hear more info about your hybrid power system. Best of luck, I am soon hoping to move to a MMJ friendly state or that mine will become one of those. I suspect you will gather quite a following over the next several weeks. Great Work!

Hello Folks,

Wanted to share with you the day’s events and news. Today I completed a new area of the cabin that will be used for clones and veg. I have been sharing the budding room with my vegging plants during the light period, then moving them every time the lights are to be off to another area with enough light to keep the cycle. Not anymore!

Also, I decided that I will be SCROGing the Two Arjan's Haze in a 24"H X 4'L X 3'W screen. They will be under 2 400Watt HPS or One 1000Watt HPS (undecided). The mesh size is 2"X3" and the frame is constructed of custom made cedar board. (Left over’s from the humidor )
Mmmmm the smell of cut cedar and cannabis!

I think I understand what you mean by county regulations being contrary to state law. I do think in some situations there is dependence on community regulation or village regulation here in Alaska; however there is a lot of territory here and it is governed very differently than the rest of the United States. It’s more like another country than another state...Yet so is Cali!

As for AUH, yes I have grown it before. I have grown #1 before as well. VERY VERY large plant. I have been working with these on keeping them in small areas and it seems to be an actual leaf issue. The leafs of this haze line are absolutely huge. They cover so much area; it’s hard to get light to new growth without it stretching to get there. If you need any help with these by all means let me know.

SUPER LEMON HAZE, on my list as well.

I have been very happy with Green house for my medical options. I would say however, (ironically) that I would vote for Nirvanas Widow as the most effective in regards to medicinal applications. (With exception to Anxiety)

hey woodsman, I am currently planning on scroging 6 rhinos together. Each plant is appx. 7'' tall with 5-6 nodes. I use an air basket design with a good soil and perlite mix. I was wondering how far above the plants do you place your screen. Do you "top" of "FIM" the plants before the screen is set in place, and how long do you give the plants to fill the screen? Sorry for the barrage of questions, but you look like you got your ducks in a row.

Well I make my SCROG height at 24" (2feet) to insure plenty of room for the bucket, plant, and spacer regardless of plant height. By spacer I mean what ever is being placed between the floor and bucket bottom. (Air circ) This is just a height that I became comfortable with and works well for tight spaces. It is ideal for use with a 5 gal bucket.
I do use the LST method for the majority or the veg growth prior to submitting it to the screen. The objective is to create as much internodial growth as possible before being restricted by the screen. It helps to know what kind of stretching the particular strain is capable of during flowering, in order to predict how much growth you will have above the screen that is not flower. I use a rule of thumb that states never flower later than 60% full Scrog, and never place the plant under the screen until it can fill about 20% with no further bending. (This is not a RULE, just rule of thumb) Everyone seems to have their own technique to LSTing and SCROGing. I think that it makes it yours when you apply a bit of your own thought to the design of your bending!


Be sure that your screen is high enough above the plant that you can water, remove lower growth, tend the plant, and take good photos! I do must of my screen filling by pulling the growth back down through the screen, moving it out from center as far as it will go, and poking the end back up through. I only remove growth if it is covering a bud site from receiving light, or is below the screen and not receiving light. (Tucking works wonders)

Because I had the lights slammed on them originally because for tight nodes and a short bushy structure. I guess I need to start training my girlies now then? This is my 2nd attempt indoors. The first time I didn't take pics or document, more just for trial and error and to have fun. I used 3 $10 shop lights with T8 fluoro tubes for veg and flower. The results weren't groundbreaking, but it was more than expected. I am contemplating upgrading to a 600watt HPS for flower this time, but I excpet to stick with this current setup because the fluoros will allow me to touch the canopy with the lights and cost is kinda an issue right now. Each light fixture holds 2 32watt T8 fluoros just for referece. Anyway before I clutter your post. Thanks again. Your a bank of great info. RIU should be pleased to have you.

hey woodsman ill be watching this thread closely - its exactly what ive been lookin for - went to alaska 2 years ago for sum salmon fishing and fell in love with the place, im currently looking at buying a piece of land up there and have been wondering about the outdoor grows up there. how early do they need to be done by september? with all the moisture up there is mold an issue? and then theres the bears!!! but that is so worth it just to live in that beauty. that and while i was up there i smoked some mudbog that kicked ass! well as i said ill be watching so keep it up and best of luck!
