UK drug education

In America I've heard that it's called D.A.R.E when over exaggerated and clearly false facts about drugs are taught to kids in school. I live in the UK and I'll tell you my personal experience on how our education system can be very destructive to children's minds.

This all started in the year 2000 when I was 6 years old. I was in Year 1 (American equivalent to 1st Grade) and my teacher informed us that we were going to learn about drugs. At this age, most children either think all drugs are the same or have no idea what drugs are, therefore they are very open to the propaganda. The teacher read a booklet called something like "The Dangers of Cannabis". Let me tell you, this was just the worst set of lies I've heard in my life. But I was scared to death at the time due to being brainwashed. Firstly, there was a 'true story' about someone who smoked a joint and it induced psychosis, and he saw aliens under his floorboards, then ripped off his floorboards and destroyed his house trying to kill the aliens. I've smoked countless joints and bong hits, which has actually LESSENED my social anxiety and panic attacks.

Next, we absorbed some fake propaganda about LSD. According to my teacher, LSD can cause chromosome damage and can make your head turn sideways due to liquid pressure in your neck. I've taken LSD maybe 20 times since age 16 and my head is perfectly straight. Also, there was a 'true' story of a man who took a single tab and went crazy for the rest of his life, then committed suicide.

Maybe one of the most absurd lies that had been told to everyone in my class, going back to weed, was the claim thst smoking a joint is more toxic than drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes. If I remember correctly, "One cannabis cigarette is just as toxic as a whole pack of tobacco cigarettes".

Being the naïve child I was, I succumbed to these pathetic lies for nearly 9 years, until at age 14 I had my first joint. No lung cancer, no psychosis, nothing! Thank god I decided to smoke that joint, because now I can educate others about the lies being told by the education system.

Sorry if this is badly written, I'm high :P

It's crazy how much misinformation we're fed as children and young adults. I didn't try any psychedelics until I was almost 30 because I was always told they would cause permanent brain damage. I know it sounds so stupid once you know the real facts about these substances, but when that's what you are told your whole life that's what you believe. Now that I've been properly educated on the real risk and side effects I enjoy these amazing gifts to mankind.

in dare class, the officer told us heroin is stored in your poo,and so addictive(describes withdrawl as the flu and hulk hogan,it was the late 80s)that junkies would poo or store their poo in jars, and sharpen clothes hangers, dip it in their poo,and push the poo rod into their veins.i shit you not!(no pun intended)..
he also had a double sided sealed briefcase with clear windows, like a dollhouse display, with examples of a bunch of different drugs and forms..all i could think was "im gonna do everyone of those motherfuckers when i get older!"..and did!

i say this all of the time, but i seriously think that lumping all drugs together and saying weed is just as bad as say heroin, it's very misleading...
i'm not saying heroin is bad per se, just that it has a way higher risk of becoming addicted to it and damaging lives then cannabis.. but when teachers and who ever say, yup, all drugs are bad, and someone finally tries weed and finds out it's the harmless drug that it is, then that person might think.. hmm, well, they lied about weed, maybe they're lying about coke and meth and dope, and these drugs aren't nearly as bad as weed is..
so naturally after trying weed and seeing it's no big thing, they then try something a bit further down the line with the same mind set, and learn the hard way that not all drugs are equal in their addictive properties.
idk, i'm rambling, i'm just trying to say it's pretty stupid to lump all drugs together and has probably caused way more harm then if they would have just been honest from the get go..

I was going to add that point - When I first found out that weed wasn't even harmful (very beneficial, in fact), I started experimenting with all sorts of stuff. Maybe the education system is causing the elusive gateway effect of weed in this way?

The previous year one of the videos they show (cant expect a teacher to actually remeber all the propangada) showed alcholics drinking mouth wash, , well woudent you know it earlier that day the class was given free hand out samples of a mouth wash ....................

I told this story. A traveling "anti drug circus" came to my highschool. There were a bunch of ex type, scared straight people who thought they were doing good by lying.

what they didn't understand is that those who fail at something are rarely experts. If I talk to an addict and he says "I am why you shouldn't do drugs" I am talking to the wrong person. It is like talking to a homeless person about economics. He didn't get it right. I want to talk to someone who did.

anyway this guy described how his father was an alcoholic and vomited. Chunks of his own liver. I am no doctor but I know the human body enough to know that is impossible. Of course nothing he could say after that would be believable.

I was in a drug education class and the coach (why was it always a coach) told us all sorts of bullshit till I called him on it.

"you want to teach the class"?

I said I did and spent three weeks telli g the truth about drugs to the others.

the short of it is that every drug has an uo side and a down side, some more uo, some more down. Make I formed choices.

sounds strange, i know my son who was 6 in 2008 did not receive any talk on drugs at school
i'm sure this does not happen until you are atleast 10-12
he was learning about mdma recently.. must of been a history lesson

what kind of school did you go to ?

maybe you're getting the drug talk mixed up with "stranger danger" lol
