Trying again. Pro mix hp, 3 purple pope seeds from night owl. Any help appreciated.

K I’m going to try this again. Decided i will make a diary this time because i am sick of constantly having small seedlings after 2 weeks of coming out of the soil and i am hoping you guys will have advice. Just popped all three into a glass of room temp water. The current plan is after 16 hours i am going to place them into a paper towel. When the taproot comes out i will put my dry pro mix into a bucket. I will than add a little water at a time to try to get it so the pro mix barely has any water in it. Just enough that if i pinch it really hard between 2 fingers i will see only a bit of water come out onto my finger (not dripping) i will than put the pre moistened pro mix into my growing containers and place them in my tent with a 315 watt CMH light.8A00B01E-7DDC-446B-B036-8D29A2D6F875.jpeg

For reference these are the seedling that cracked the surface 12 days ago. The stretching is because i had them by my window for the first 3 days for natural sunlight. I do not get very much sun in the window so probably wasn’t the greatest idea.559A2018-6D49-446D-BC18-BCD90C5E25A8.jpeg0DA6C618-8BE8-4B32-935A-C450387B65D5.jpeg3E65DAB6-1EC7-4AD4-A9A3-DC83ACFBB1A6.jpeg

Make a little support with a bamboo skewer or something to hold them up until the stems get stronger. Once the plant is a foot tall that space underneath is a good thing for air flow.

Soak the new beans for 14 hours then plant directly into the HP watered well with low dose nutes. Don't water again until the pot starts to feel light. Lay a baggie or something over the pots so the surface doesn't dry out until they break the surface then remove that.

I've been using HP for over 15 years and have the best germination rates just roughing up the beans with a bit of sandpaper in a pill jar then planting directly into moist pots like I described. Nice and warm at 75 - 80 gets them up in 2 - 3 days usually. No pre-soaking or paper towel needed.

Good luck!

Well i would edit the first post to try and not confuse anyone but they don’t allow you to after 1 day for whatever reason. So update. After the soak i skipped placing in paper towel planted them into small pots with pro mix hp. I mixed it first in a bucket with some water so i could barely see any water if squeezed. I than filled up 3 small containers with the mix than placed a seed in each. I than sprayed the top with just a small mist of water to make sure it has enough to fully germinate. I am going to cover them with a dome until i see something pop up and place them on my windowsill which doesn’t get direct sunlight.CC231339-3F7B-42DA-B123-A68A8C2605A0.jpeg

You may want to put a dish towel or something between the mat and the pots, those mats can get too hot. If I use one I always have a timer and set it to something like 5 mins on, 5 mins off. Keeps them warm but not too hot. If your temps are cold it can be ok though.

Thanks for the suggestion. My room is sitting at 21 C and it says on the mat that it will increase temps by 5-13 C. To get on the high end they seem to be saying that i should put it on an insulated surface. It’s on my cold floor though so i am hoping it doesn’t get too hot. Going to monitor it and see.

DAY 1 They have all sprouted today. Guess time to start the clock. I am going to keep putting the humidity domes on for a few hours at a time to try and get them to grow roots but not stressing them out too much. I am thinking that if they are getting high humidity than low they might grow roots faster to try and make sure they are getting water. Thinking 4 hours on 1 hour off. Thinking about moving them to my tent because I don’t really get any sun but might let then have a day to get settled in.B5634193-46C0-4079-A766-50F0810FAE32.jpeg

They don’t need much light when they have just sprouted. The ones that have true leaves need more light but not the whole 315w yet, so you have to shade them and acclimate them. Seedlings can be tricky to water at a good interval because their needs change a lot. Good luck.

I know it is overkill but don’t have any other light so i just put it under the 315 but place it at the very top of my tent. It’s running anyway and electricity is cheap where i am at. I am hoping the humidity dome reduces the light strength a bit as well.

You want good strong light on them so I would not have that 315 any more than 24" from the tops or they are going to stretch more. I run a 400CMH at 18" to start and no humidity dome. You risk damp-off aka stem rot and I've never heard that doing that will make the roots grow any faster. The tap roots are probably close to the bottom of the pots already. A 4" sprout can have an 8" root easy.

Let the show begin! :)

Good to know. I will have to lower the light because i was keeping it 3 feet above. I think i am going to have trouble with the small pots drying out too quick. That’s one of the reasons for the dome. The top dries out way too quick with the humidity being at %20. I can’t sit there babying them at the moment because i need to work. I placed then in the tent last night after giving them a couple squirts of water and a wet dome and the top of the pro mix and the dome was already dry 7 hours later. I would add a humidifier but it is cold here in canada and high humidity indoors with it cold outside doesn’t seem like a good idea.

I leave all my seedlings under 24/7 with maybe 50 watts of light. Keep lights on 24/7 until they get their second set of true leaves. You will not have that stretch problem any more. Here is a 2 week old baby that is now under bigger light and 18/6:

I don’t have a stretch problem actually. It is just that the other batch was in front of a window with barely any sun. Every grow has actually been like yours nice and low. Thanks for the advice though. I have my lights on 20/4 but might switch at some point. Probably a good idea so I don’t have a temperature swing.

Don't worry about the tops drying up as there is lots of water further down. Keeping that top wet and not allowing things to dry down is what leads to root rot and other problems. If you dumped one of those pots out you'd find roots all over the place already reaching to or near the bottom.

That advice to water when it's dry one or two knuckles down is the old bro-science way to water and will just cause problems.

Maybe except for coco but I don't use that stuff partly for its needy and bothersome hassles about watering. I really don't see the appeal.

If your plants are inside it doesn't matter what the temp or humidity is outside. You want to make the best environment you can in your plant's grow space regardless of outside conditions.

Unfortunately i think they ended up getting too dry today. The 1 plant was already drooping and really dry. I sprayed them with a decent amount of water around the plant but not at the stem. I am thinking i might spray it for 1 more day tomorrow than the day after using a dropper to fully moisten the pot till runoff unless it is too early for that. The reason i say I can’t increase the humidity is because it is bad for your house if you have high or normal humidity in winter. Maybe i could get a humidifier for the tent and a dehumidifier to combat it but I don’t really have the money or a vehicle to make that worth it. Plus winter is coming to an end shortly.
