i was just wondering why is it people often put there seeds in small containers/pots first and then transplant them once or even twice to larger ones?
is there some kind of upside to doing this?

easier to feed and water, no point watering a big pot with a small plant with small roots

Also saves in space and soil/materials, which can be expensive. I would much rather germinate in a cup, so if I loose a seedling in a cup I haven't wasted very much of anything. Then I veg in a one gallon container (or less), and I wont know which plants are the real keepers until I sex and eliminate the males (if starting from seed). No point in allowing potential males to grow in anything like a 3-gal container when they will most likely end up being culled.

Smaller pots = room for more initial starts + less waste + convenience
