colas are the main top bud sites that end up growing into each other making the look of one large bud. ever heard of a solid single cola plant? its cause they grew it short from clone and all the sites grew into each other. nodes are the intersections between leaf sites. for instance the first set of leaves is the first node, second set, the second node, etc. i wait until it has spit out 5 nodes before topping. you top by various methods, but i cut the small set of leaves that havent spread out yet (they look hed together sticking straight up. some cut below this to encourage lower growth to catch up with the top. when you cut, the node, or set of leaves below the cut take over as the main new growth and the plants energy is sent to the top where these two sets of leaves are. when you cut really depend on the health of the plant. my white widows spit out five finger leaves on the third set, so i can cut on the fourth. i always let it have 5 fingers first to reduce the stress from cutting and prevent it from hermie. if you are going to grow it out and tp it to 4 colas, id cut as soon as i could, then let it recover for a week, and cut again. if the plant gets cut when its already 2' or more you end up with a tall plant due to the exrta veg time for recovery. depending on how strong your light is will depend on the growth of the bud. for example i use 400w hps lights and they really dont promote much fruiting below a foot of the canopy (the top of the plants).

supercropping is a different ways of making the plant grow. most commonly know def for supercropping is to pinch the stem, but you have to develop skill at knowing which side to pinch, pinch the wrong side and snap! but supercropping is also lst, low stress training by tying the branches down and away from the stalk to allow more light through. i do this with mother plants as well as taking cuttings from the top which creates a uniform sort of dome look. i.e.:

If you are growing vertically (a plant strait up like normal) to a overhead light source, then topping can be beneficial as you will put more flowering sites up close to the light.

IF you are CFL (for instance) and low growing LST, then when you top all you have done is remove your main primary flower site.

REMEMBER.. when you top you DON'T get two NEW branches.. you simply get the two that were growing UNDER the top to branch out and reach for the top light..

When you LST you already have done that.. fostered an environment where those two branches that would grow out if you topped, grow out anyway AND you don't lose your extra top.

But that's just my take.. don't EVER do anything I ever say without your own research.

Peace~!

Loving the sound of LST, but can u do it from a clone that's already grown about a foot? Top info guys!!

You can do LST at ANY time.. including flower (although I try not to be too radical with it during flower.

In my situation, topping a plant I would lose a top, and it would take two weeks for the plant to start healing..

2 weeks in a perpetual grow is 1/4 of a harvest time (or so)..

I can't stress enough though.. if you are growing vertically, topping 'may' make sense.. you want as much flower spots as you can get up to your one source light..

i topped 3 babies yesterday at the 2nd node and besides losing what were just a few nodes above it (about 1 solid and 2 newer ones coming into themselves) the plant is fine and the side colas can be seen already coming through, that's after 1 day. why would the plant take 2 weeks to heal?
the only way i can see that is if you top the plant at the 2nd node when it already has around 10 true nodes which would be- at that point, stupid.

you top when they are babies, so that you are not chopping weeks worth of growth.

btw- i'm not callling you stupid, just the act of topping at the 2nd node after the plant is obviously too tall.
