Topping the mother?

I want to take a a few clones from 3 plants I am growing from seeds and force them to flower so I can determine their sex to avoid males polinating females.

Basically i'm going for a SOG method.

What I am curious about, is am I able to keep the mother plants from growing additionally while they are kept vegging?

Do i just top them everytime they are growing to big for the space I am using?

Will this cause stress and affect the quality of the mothers clones?

I just topped one of my mothers.... it was getting too big for my aerogarden, so i just cloned the top. I think too much topping(stress) can cause a plant to turn Hermie, but i am not 100% sure.

so.. when you take clones a good rule of thumb is to never cut down more than 1/3 the plant.. same with topping
