Topping help needed

Last time I grew a plant and topped it, it came out like this:




I don't know what i did wrong, but i would like it to look like this instead:

Topping makes it grow multiple tops, like in picture 1. If you want it to look like picture 2, don't top it.

Topping almost always turns 1 top into 2, but if you FIM you can get multiple tops.
