Too young for CLF?

I am growing..."tomato plants" for the first time, and I was told to keep them out of direct sunlight for a few weeks..they're 1-2 weeks old and it's not very bright here lately so their growth has been very very slow. I'm setting up my CFL set up today and I need to know if it's ever *too* young to start artificially lighting plants?

ALSO:

One of my plants seems to be overwatered..it isn't growing very well and it's set of leaves is now curling downward :/ what should I do to fix it?

You can start CFLs on them from the beginning. Who told you that?? Lights all the way! I did - with the seed in the soil. It's actually recommended, since it's much cooler and more gentle than MH, or HPS if your one of those folks who go 400w+ HPS from the beginning.

Water it less? You letting them dry inbetween waterings? How much water you giving them, and what sort of setup do you have going on?

I was told direct sunlight can hurt seedlings! Right now I keep them under a skylight from 9:00am to 5:00pm, then to my windowsill until dark (the skylight loses it's mojo around then), where I put them in my germination room. After today, I will have a light set up where it will be 150-200 watts of CFL's at 18/6...I'm just worried I'm going to overwater or underwater them! I've never grown anything before and I'm never sure when to water

seedlings are indeed very fragile, but i have never had a problem starting them under cfl lights, if your worried about too much intensity you can always put a t-5 flourecent a few inches from it without burning it. it will be good, just make sure you have good ventilation and a fan in your set up or they wont make it far.
overwatering/ underwatering is a big issue for little seedlings, just keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy allow for good drainage and whatever you do dont let it dry out, small seedlings usually have a single taproot that is easily suffocated from over watering or easily dried out from underwatering.
i prefer to start seedlings in root plugs/ peat pellets/ rockwool whatever just some small starting pellet, and water by misting with a spaybottle several times a day. this does take work to keep an eye on them but as long as you dont spray too much water and dont let the pellets dry they are fine and when roots grow through the pellets they can be transplanted and watered normally

lol ... yea its fine cfl's wont hurt your babies ... I use em from the time they break ground ... only way to hurt em is to get it too close ( hard to do with cfl ) but possible .. keep it a few inches above em and set a fan to just barely move em at first but enough to move some air between the plants and light incase ..... good luck

cfl stands for compact flourecent its a type of flourecent light that is suited for growing because of the lumen per watt. most people only use cfl lights for vegitive growth as they produce only moderate yields when flowering, however i feel cfls are the way to go for stealth grows.
if you buy a cfl make sure to check the output, buy one in the 6500k range for vegging and in the 2500k range for flowering, these are listed on the box but you sometimes have to look for them. also most cfl lights will have a inaccurate wattage listed on the box, this is comparable wattage ie if it says 150 watts on a box it may not be actual wattage but produce the same lumens as a 150 watt light. hope this helps
and dont knock the guy for growing his "tomatoes" let them do as they wish. also if he really is only growing tomatoes, and everyone slams him for it he will think stoners are nothing but a bunch of ass holes and we want the world to view us as everyday people, come on guys dont give people negative perceptions about cannabis.

yes lets ask about grow tomatoes on a cannabis forum... some people just dont need to smoke or grow imo if your that worried about it then dont do it.

My marijuana cough* tomato plants are doing great under cfls.

And also to all you morons who didn't catch his tomato joke, it was a silly little innuendo that became unfunny once everybody examined it. It was meant for quick laugh, not a serious title.

He can call it whatever he wants, I change mine all the time. Hops, Jalapenos, Tomatoes, African Violets, it all means the same thing to us.

oh my bad, im a horrible speller and i dont even see CLF, i read that and immediately think compact flourecent. sorry just trying to be helpful

seriously ... I have noticed this trend for a bit ... someone new will ask a basic question and and get far more critiques about the post than answer's . Thats what the forums are for isn't it .. they are trying to learn and those of us somewhat in the know are supposed to try and help them .. seems pretty simple to me ... I see no need in belitteling everyone to try and make yourself look better on a friggin public forum ...
