Top away! Most FIM and topping guides recommed around the 3rd set of nodes but it is up to personal preference as you can top, top and top as long as it is still in vegging with enough time to recover before flowering starts. I've never grown outdoors but is it possible to get a general idea of when it should go into flower by taking into account when it was planted, the length of the strain, how early or late in your paticular 'season' you put it out.
Trying to gather some info as I would love to catch the season here next year, little to late now though I think.

Topping can be done during vegging or flowering but i would not go no further than the second week when topping in the flowering stage, sometimes good to top the odd plant that is out growing the others because topping will hold the plant up by 7 14 days. This will give the smaller plants time to catch up i always multipul top during vegging this gives me far more bud sites and always leave at least one plant alone just because i like the big fat colas, not much to be gained weight wise any how.The plants that i have topped and the ones i leave alone still produce about the same min 8 oz max 10/12

8-10 oz is nice:) so for you topping has no effect on your bud yield. hmm. for me my plant was extremely skinny and i topped it to help it fill out more since i didnt LST it.

Do not TOP it if in flowering.. DO NOT TOP IT if it will not have 2 Full weeks to recover before FLOWERING or you wont be improving your chance on a better yield but certainly reducing your yield.

Topping for Better yield works when You give the NEW shoots a few weeks to actually grow*.. doesnt and will not improve yield if you TOP the same day of 12/12 switch.. it will just make two or more SMALLER colas.. since you diddnt give the NEW branches time to grow..
