To vent or not to vent

I have a 400W MH/HPS switchable and a 3'w x 2'd x 6't grow tent. Im going soiless soil for my first grow. Im getting mixed advise about ventilation. Some some are saying the light is going to turn the tent into a dessert and will need proper exhuast/intake. Some are saying that as long as I have a fan dedicated to the light and open the door every so often It will be fine. Any advice on what I should do with this light and tent would be awsome.

you will certainly want to have your ventilation setup. the light will produce heat and you will need to get rid of that heat. put your inline fan high for an exhaust. heat rises.. Intakes should be lower as cold air sinks.

Thanx for the input! The light does have an air-coolable hood would a 60cfm exhuast fan be suffeciant?

prob not, u would need an inline exhaust fan, probablly 6" to pull the hot air from the light and tent. its not practical to open the door every so often because there will be times u arent home or around them and the lights put off alot of heat. try amazon or www.htgsupply.com

edit: make sure its not one of the inline booster fans that r only like 25 or 30 bucks, people say those arent made to be used alone, and wont exhaust enough hot air to keep ur temps in the right range

Your missing the real issue here, Co2!! If you don't replace the air in a tent you will use up the Co2 very quickly and your plants will slow down with out it, that's why you need fresh air in there all the time.

by creating negative pressure, the exhaust fan will suck the stale air out, the intakes will bring air in.

good, that's all that's needed to bring in fresh air. It's called passive intakes and there is a large debate over intake fans, I personally just use passive intakes in my box. i tried all the different pc fans but didnt see a difference.

If you are not concerned with filtering the exhaust air for smell. A 200+ CFM 6" fan should do fine as long as your passive intakes are open.

this is my set up for winter time.

CARBON FILTER----------->>>600HPS REFLECTOR HOOD-------------->>>>450CFM 6"fan on speed controller low setting ($20)-------->>exhaust outdoors. CO2 bag sitting on light, Vent flaps on bottom of tent opened. Temps 73 night and 84 day.
