You want to place 80% of your future colas flat to the net and during the first 10 days manipulate them to their final position, place the lower branches that you want to keep in their final position and cut off the rest.
At the end of flowering you want 30-50cm growth over the net.

With a scrog it is easier to maintain an even canopy of many buds compared to tying every cola.

I'm in an aero tub with 5 plants. If I top them and get them to grow out from the center and fill the net, how can it be easier? I'm not understanding. Easier in that I have to do less work?
But isn't the end result the same? Or maybe even better because I'm training the plants to fill the area the way I need them too?
Not trying to be argumentative. Just trying to comprehend having never done either way.

I've done both. Only tied them to the top of the net once and never done or will do it again.

You'll be bending branches and tying them down on top of one another. At VERY awkward angles in the end. Once those branches swell and they're trying to push up the major stress points will be right where you tied them and not spead out along a net. You WILL have breakage.
On top of all this during my experiment there was loads of underdeveloped buds due to being shaded by branches being tied over. In the end it turned out to be a good 5 ounces of very mediocre product. Fluffy, small and didn't pack on the swell like everything else did. Now 5 ounces of mediocre product out of a 3x3 area is a lot of dope. Especially with a just a single 600 watter over it. Those 5 ounces of fluffy buds would have easily been 9-10 ounces of fat/dense 1.5 to 2 gram nuggets just like the rest of the developed nugs were all across the board from it. The whole perk to a scrog is that you DON'T get larfy or even fluffy buds.

You're not going to be bending over and eventually putting dozens if not over 100 ties down every few days with a hot ass lamp over your head. The net already does that FOR you. You're doing nothing but adding another step to the process.

Nope nope nope stop right there and read my above statement. Once you get some splittage going on from a branch very close and coming out of the main stem everything attached to it is going to suffer. Aka the chain reaction of colas from said branch will suffer. It hinders things if anything and effects it negatively.
Also yes. Double and even triple yes.

So pretty much you'll be doing 4-5 times the work and getting less of a payout.

When you got bigger plants with many tops it is easier to place them with a net than to tie each individual branch to a stick for support (if needed) and positioning.

So should I just place my net right above the topped plants and keep tucking them as they grow out?
What kind of spacing would I want on my net? I have a 4x4 square. Right now I can tell that the spacing is too big.

Also to elaborate, my aero tub sits atop the res. So it's kind of tall to start with. I'm really looking for a flat grow area. I'm thinking that the five plants will be topped at the third node and that's right about where I want the net. So either way I'm training the plants.
Plus I'm in the tub so it's a bank of plants in a row. I can't just stick pots here and there and push them down with the screen.
So what i usually see is people growing some bushy plants up into the screen. Mine have to be trained, I think.
I've seen people mainline and tie down the plant at an early stage and really get the two stalks to grow horizontally. So if I'm running silica and staying on top of it, hopefully there won't be any breakage??
Unless you see any errors in my thinking then I'm kinda back to the original thought that either way I'm tying down or tucking and would get the same results??

Yep just have the net as far above them as you're comfortable with. I do soil so I have to have enough room to get in there and water etc. I personally keep about a foot of room under.
And yes keep tucking them. Pretty much when it's long enough to go under the next hole and stay without springing back up through the previous hole you just put the little sucker through there.
I use inch and a half holes. Built my net for 15$ and it consist of a simple wooden frame. Legs I can adjust the height as desired and a bale of plastic garden fencing from home depot. The inch and a half holes work just fine for me.By the time everything is said and done with stretching there's little to no bare spaces in the canopy. It's nice because I can play with em and have everything spaced just the way I want it.
I've seen pics on the net of people using chicken wire even. I avoided it cause the plastic is softer and you don't have any sharp edges.
Depends on your light/hood. I'm running 600 and a 4x4 would probably be overkill. But I did loads of digging and saw a lot of people say 2.5 x 2.5 etc. Mty buds at the end corners are a bit smaller but still awesome. It's extra smoke I otherwise wouldn't have. When it's dried in the jar it all looks the same then.
That I can't comment on. I've never used silica.
Nah they look healthy as can be. Have you done any topping or anything on them yet? What's your gameplan when it comes to that?
